I'm snowed in at the moment, I may post some stuff from the last few hunts I went on, but I haven't found anything all that spectacular. Now the ground is frozen and covered with snow, so I thought I'd say something about @steveg's fiberglass lowers after I had some time to use it.

I may add more observations when Virginia becomes diggable again, the last couple of years have been great, global warming was fun while it lasted. 🫤

I'm the only one to order one of these lowers, I did so because I primarily hunt with the 11x13" coil. Big coil, big field. When people started talking about how carbon fiber is conductive, I got to thinking that since there are no really new toys for the Deus 2, why not look at this issue?

Admittedly I didn't do the "hand test", I've never really noticed much noise other than from what I thought might be running the detector a little hot, which I am guilty of. 😅

Here's a closeup of the fiberglass lower, it's slightly ribbed, a bit heavier than the carbon fiber lower, and equally as stiff:

It fits neatly into the brilliant carbon fiber rig that Steve created. First off I like that it's matte because the glossy CF lowers get scratched to crap after a lot of use despite cleaning. I find it much easier at the end of the day to shrink the detector for charging, so that's the first advantage.

Here it is attached to the 13" elliptical, I like the coil to not move at all, so I use a single XP washer on it, he has improved the yoke. 👍 No more flop!!

Now here's the downside, the D2 with all the other stuff like the RCDIGS mount ends up weighing about 2.9 pounds... 😬 But I use it so much I don't notice it anymore:

On to the observations. I've been using CF most of the year, so I hoped that the detector would get a little quieter swinging it, which it did. I have no idea why this would be the case but it was nice. No extraneous blips while finding nothing. 🤔 Shortening the shaft length helped with the weight but forced me to wear shoes with no metal..

I was really surprised when I also found that the IDs seemed a little tighter, both on the beach and in the field. Not staggeringly so, but tighter. It also seemed to perform better in brackish water. I hope to get it to a larger beach soon. I did some wash "spearfishing" without the antenna, and didn't get as much noise from the moving water.

Overall I like it better than the CF lower. I am pleased with the purchase and thank SteveG for his concern for us all, and his innovative, tough, and long lasting gear. 🙂

  • The title was changed to SteveG's Fiberglass Lower For The Deus 2? Why Not?

If that new 10x5" or 9.5x5" HF coil comes out and is as good as we hope then you'll likely need that shaft more than ever.  You're just prepared ahead of time.

Thanks Phrunt,

I have high hopes for that new coil, especially that I can get one when they come out. 😅 Great thought, I'll probably just get another FG shaft for it, or just use the one they ship with a WS6 Master rig as long as it's not CF.

Come to think of it, Since the battery for the coil may well be in the lower shaft, that may be my only recourse. 🤔

What is the difference in weight between the fiberglass and carbon fiber lower rods?

I should have weighed everything before installing it 🤦‍♂️, it's noticeably heavier. I'll do that and reply again. 🙂

I’ve worked with Steve for a number of years now on several things and can attest to the quality of his products without reservation.  He is a stand up guy and avid detectorist.
Bottom line; you can buy with confidence.  You’ll be happy you did….

Steelheader --

A 23 1/4" carbon-fiber Manticore lower runs about 54g; the same length in a glass-fiber MC lower is 66g.

Thanks!

Steve
