Detected for quartz float on two different hillside claims on two consecutive days with the GM 24k using the 6 “ concentric coil. On the first day the detector and coil performed as expected, no issues. This first claim is close to an EMI source, a microwave station and radio traffic but no problems experienced. Mid way through the second day on a different claim further from any EMI source the detector lockup three different times and stop detecting. The TID numbers would rapidly jump at mid range spanning between mid 40’s to mid 50’s. Shutdowns and restarts, changing frequencies, performing factory resets, lowering sensitivity would not stabilize the detector. Finally shutdown the detector then disconnected the coil, checked under the coil cover and connection, after a period of time reconnecting the coil would bring the  detector back on line. Battery pack was at a full charge. Checked the 6 “ concentric coil today and after a few minutes the problem repeated itself.  Less than 11 hours on the detector and 6” coil, no field use on the 10x6 other than testing. So far I have not been to repeat the problem with the 10x6 DD coil. I’ll give Garrett a call tomorrow. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Garrett GM 24K or with either coil?

No but that does not mean much. I'm sorry you are having a problem with it. Coils actually fail more than detectors. It's pretty simple. If the 10x6 works and concentric does not, the concentric needs to be replaced.

I am liking the 6 “ concentric, just trying to narrow down the problem before speaking with Garrett. In the morning I’ll turn on detector then walk away to verify it is not user error.
Thanks for the reply

Been testing both the 6” concentric and 10x6 DD coils with a full battery pack. No issues with the 10x6.  With the 6” concentric there would be a high volume spike then a constant mid range TID shift. Frequency shifts, factory resets and lowering the sensitivity setting did not resolve the issue. Contacted Garrett MD they are sending out a replacement coil plus a return shipment label.

My first thought is the connector may have a bad solder joint. I had something like this happen with a coil on the MXT when I had one.  Cold joint had come loose and would make contact when detector was moved around, then come loose again.  Is Garrett asking for the original once you receive the new one?

If the replacement coil fixes the problem I just need to ship the original coil back to Garrett. If the replacement coil does not correct the problem Garrett asked me to ship both 6” coils and the control unit to them for repair. Garrett was easy to work with, so far they are covering the cost of shipping.
I have a 5 gallon bucket of dirt that has been around for a few years. I setup the 24K with the factory settings, a full battery then tested the detector with the 6” coil sitting on top of the dirt, no coil movement. After a few minutes the volume would spike followed by the mid-TID random movement. After a restart the problem would repeat; after several attempts I called Garrett. The issue is similar to EMI but shifting frequency did not help. If the problem is with the control box I would think the 10x6 DD coil would have the same issue which it did not when tested over the dirt bucket for a couple of hours. Hopefully the 6” concentric is attempting to point out a fairly large gold deposit under foot.

The replacement 6” concentric coil arrived from Garrett on 1/16/25. No problem with 6”  coil during preliminary testing. Used the 10x6 DD a full day detecting a mining claim with no issues. Will take the 6” coil for a run in a couple days. So far the volume spike and mid frequency oscillations appear to be with the original. 6” coil.
