Popular Post phrunt
A couple of days ago a meteorite landed right near to where I live, unfortunately it's very mountainous terrain where it was suspected to land. The houses along the lake to the top right of the map photo saw it come past and heard a sonic boom, then it disappeared down into the mountains to the right of the lake A photo of it coming past from the news story. The area it landed, lots of bush around too making it even harder. If it's found it will be only the 11th meteorite found in New Zealand. Here is the news story for anyone interested. I think a bit beyond my capabilities to try and find it. 19 2 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/ Share on other sites
EL NINO77
I don't know if the fire recording cameras would be able to locate the location...it's hard to say in the mountains. ultimately everything depends on the exact information about the impact location... I don't know if the cameras used to record the fire would be able to locate the place...it's hard to say in the mountains in the end, everything depends on the exact information about the place of impact... I really found my meteorite.. by accident...while testing detectors...in the terrain where my colleague took me..because this terrain could give a lot of false signals as if it were a non-ferrous target.. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-290064 Share on other sites
Aureous
Ive seen meteorites hit the ground twice, both at night. Me and my Brother set out to find one we saw the next day, thinking 'should be easy'.... after 3 days searching, we gave up. Even when you know the direction and area, the appearance of a 'big fireball' doesn't mean its big, especially at night. The amount of light given off will be very deceiving. You could be looking for a golf ball sized object (or way smaller) in a 50 acre area, almost impossible. 8 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-290077 Share on other sites
Geologyhound
Plus, iron nickel pallasites are a rather small percentage of meteors. Stony meteorites and carbonaceous chondrites are not going to give a signal to a metal detector. The chondritic meteors tend to break up. This can give a good light show but won’t leave you anything obvious to find. The stony meteorites will just look like normal rocks unless you have an obvious fusion crust from a fresh fall. Even then, the fusion crust can blend in with desert varnish or lichen growth. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-291233 Share on other sites

I also did an earlier post about the Mokoia Meteorite that landed in Waverly on the 7th 1999. I followed this story when it happened. You caught my EYE way back then. Soon I'll be on a mission to uncover many hidden things within NZ. I have the time now to venture forth. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-294142 Share on other sites
Jim Schneringer
It's a long shot, but be fun to try to find it. Maybe get as many eye witness accounts as possible and ask them specifically where they were and what direction they saw it going and if possible what kind of angle it was falling. From that information, form a general direction and path of the meteor, then walk that straight line. Go back and forth walking parallel to that line until you find it or realize you gave it your best shot. Good luck! phrunt
a team got together to try and find it and had little success. Most the eye witness accounts closest to the landing site were in Queenstown where the houses look out over the lake and towards the mountains to the south where it passed, these houses tend to be covered in windows south facing for the views so many people saw it but beyond that it becomes sparsely populated and there didn't seem to be anyone further south that reported seeing it closer to where it would have landed. The terrains just so wild it will probably never be found. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-294307 Share on other sites

Meteorite hunters here in the states use that info (which is public) to track those for finding fall fields. It would be great to see a meteorite hit the ground, even to find one someday as well! https://ares.jsc.nasa.gov/meteorite-falls/how-to-find-meteorites/ 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27628-a-meteorite-has-landed-right-near-me-but-i-think-impossible-to-find/#findComment-297254 Share on other sites
