tucannon
I have this loop as never been in the field. Checking and testing it tonight I noticed that cable at the relief going into the coil has a split on the outer shield. Any suggestion to repair and been long out of warranty. Thanks AC. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/ Share on other sites
phrunt
Do you mind putting a photo up? The Joey is an awesome coil. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/#findComment-290352 Share on other sites
phrunt
This one is a simple fix, you just need some Dual wall heatshrink tubing to shrink over it. If the split continues under the strain relief, you'll have to go over the top of it too, I wouldn't trust its waterproofing afterwards as the splits in a location it's hard to get a good seal. If you can get the sort with 4x shrinking you should be able to get a size that fits over the plug end and still shrinks small enough to adhere to the cable. Worse case you'd need to remove the plug end but not likely if you can find the right heat shrink. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/#findComment-290389 Share on other sites
tucannon
I appreciate for this information and will heat shrink and keep it out of water. Thank You AC Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/#findComment-290412 Share on other sites
Bob S.
Appears you live in a hot and dry climate and the outer coil wire insulation has split from time exposed. Before using the shrink tube (which is a good reinforcement), try rubbing silicone caulk in the crack to help maintain some resistance to water incursion. Remove any excess and let cure before applying the shrink tube. Hopefully the crack or possibly an open split doesn't expose the internal conductors. You will need to see how far the "crack" extends under the "pigtail" and try to push the shrink tube down to the surface of the coil casing if it does. This might give you the best protection from the crack continuing under flexure. Be conservative with the temperature to shrink the tube... Lower and longer might be best. Take a look at the "pigtail" where it meets the coil. It might possibly unscrew from a collet. If it does, you might be able to get the shrink tube to slide down the wire easier. Good luck! Coil looks like it was never used. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/#findComment-290437 Share on other sites
phrunt
The Dual wall heatshrink is lined with a glue for use in marine environments and the silicone may prevent the glue sticking well. Some silicone type products would work like Sikaflex 291 and that would be good for ensuring some waterproofing but normal silicone would stop the adhesive on the heatshrink working properly. Very good tip about the heat using the heatshrink, low and slow is always best with detecting stuff 🙂 I didn't think of that either Bob but some coils do allow you to unscrew the strain relief so if possible on the Joey he could slide it up past the damage to see if it extends under it and if it does put some sealant on the crack prior to the heatsrink. The Joey is a waterproof coil which is quite unusual for the GPX, so a shame to lose that waterproofing. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27674-coiltek-5x10-joey-mono-cable-issues/#findComment-290448 Share on other sites
