Popular Post Dcraun
Managed to pull a few things this morning out of the mud. Looks to me like a Confederate sword rig hook and some Spencer casings some miscellaneous buckles. The two things I can't identify are the Rosette and the small bras swivel. The rosette has a lead back. 14 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27710-saved-a-few-civil-war-relics-today/ Share on other sites
TheDeepseeker
Great finds Dcraun. I've long been fascinated with American history, and especially with the American civil War era. I cheated with this one though and did a google image search. I couldn't find the exact same thing but there are many similar buttons and tokens of that era that make reference to Florida and the Florida Star in relation to Confederate buttons and buckles etc. Having said that there was even one Union civil war era token that used a similar design with the six pointed star. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27710-saved-a-few-civil-war-relics-today/#findComment-290616 Share on other sites
Geologyhound
Nice relics! A couple good flat buttons too. What is odd to me is the rosette appears to be double sided. Why put a pattern on the “back” side if it’s just going to be embedded in lead? Is the back simply a punch through reflection of the front? There almost appears to be a denticle like pattern on the central ring on the back which is not visible on the front unless it is in the channel under the dirt. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27710-saved-a-few-civil-war-relics-today/#findComment-290650 Share on other sites

You are correct the back is just the punched through of the front the brass is very thin and the lead has partially fallen off the back 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27710-saved-a-few-civil-war-relics-today/#findComment-290713 Share on other sites
L David Keith
Your rosette is made of thin stamped brass with lead fill. There would have been an iron wire attached to add to a bridal or other horse tack. The design is known as a "Cherokee Rose" usually associated with Florida and fairly rare. I recovered one of their one piece cuff buttons here in Nashville where the 1st Florida cavalry was camped. The lead will continue to flake away so I would use Elmer's Carpenter glue (50/50% water & glue) and paint 2 or 3 coats, allowing each to dry. Once completely dry, I would store it in a large coin capsule or display case. Nice finds! 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27710-saved-a-few-civil-war-relics-today/#findComment-293269 Share on other sites
