Success!

Worked like a charm. I ran along the dog fence today and was easily able to find the steel stakes. Just the cable would have been possible, but way more difficult, I only got a "high" indication from the copper occasionally, maybe every 3-4' or so. Would have worked, though.

The stakes I could easily pinpoint to within a foot or so, which is plenty accurate for my application.

Thanks, everyone, for all the help!

Why not just put the collar around your neck and run around the yard until you get nailed , you’ll not only find the wire ,,but like your dog you’ll never forget where it’s at either..

We actually did that at first, well, with the collar in hand instead around the neck. But the margin of error is quite large since the collar activates a few feet before the wire. Plus it's pretty hard on the (quite expensive) batteries.

But the metal detector worked flawlessly, sometimes I would get the cable itself, but most of the time the steel nails that hold it to the ground and that are spaced a few feet apart.
