Roughwater
Gold seeker, you have a great attitude! I am going west sometime to MD. I really wanted a 6000 but just can’t rationally afford it. I could do a used 5000. What coil would you recommend for the smaller gold with the 5000? 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27792-more-nice-gpx-500019-evo-gold/page/3/#findComment-292284 Share on other sites

Is it a different location, more knowledge on the detector, more time in the field or just crazy luck? He's camped on deep gold and now he knows how to find it. I remember when I first started detecting for gold back in 2010 I met a guy on a quad in his area. He was near the RV park. I had just bought a 5000 and didn't know where to go. He told me about a couple of clubs and where big gold had been found years before. He was not finding it. HE was going on his quad 15-20 miles away and was glad to find any little piece. He was using a 3000. He didn't like digital. He was sticking with the old style. I didn't really know what all of this meant at the time. Gold Basin had already been hit hard by people I would later meet. Hundreds of meteorites and lots of nuggets had been taken by the likes of Doc, Bill Southern, Frank C, Roger D, Dolan Dave, Estrel, Jason and a host of others. Most of the good gold was before my time. I only saw a couple of ouncers and above. My finds for gold in Gold Basin are modest with the largest being about a quarter of an ounce. After the 7000 came out the story changed a bit for the locals in Gold Basin and their mantra, I heard for a time was 'big wash, big gold.' Lost Basin is a different story. It has a lot of private land and claims. It seems to be like some areas of Australia where you can find really deep gold. Reese showed me a bit of the private areas and I think if I were him I'd save the miles on my quad and stay close ... at least until he goes back to Montana. I took the family out to Gold Basin at Thanksgiving. I thought I could get lucky with another Turkey Day nugget. I told Reese we were coming, and little did I know I'd get invited to Lost Basin where Reese stays. It was an unexpected surprise. We detected hard in his area, but it had been hit hard, scraped and very little trash left. We detected there for a day and then went all the way around behind the Temple Bar Back Road in the Escalade! Google Maps could have gotten me there an easier way but sometimes Google shows you the way that takes the least time and not the easiest way. We didn't find anything on that trip either, but I have found gold there in the past. Doc says gold is not where you find it. It has a story. I think Resse's moto now of 'go big or go home' suits his need and area. I don't have that kind of time just now. Good luck. 5 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27792-more-nice-gpx-500019-evo-gold/page/3/#findComment-292285 Share on other sites

Detecting slopes with a large coil has its own issues, so yes there is potential there. You will need to use a harness & have a strong arm/shoulder & a swing arm to help make is "easier". Goldseeker5000
I do use a harness, and a 7000 guide arm. I will swing the 5000 with the 19 on some very steep slopes. I got two little ones a couple days ago with the 19". The two pics of gold on the scale is two different batches of gold. Both are now sold. 8 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27792-more-nice-gpx-500019-evo-gold/page/3/#findComment-292323 Share on other sites
