Self and partner have had good finds in WA with early model 4500's, a great detector, If was detecting on Oz and not going to WA, (Vic & Tib) I would recommend for a newbie a 2nd hand 2300 at around $2700 Aud .  If going to WA I would go with the 2nd hand $5000, at around $3000 Aud and have Mick at Detectronics Mod it for $2000.  A mate ( experienced prospector) had his 5k modded and is selling his 6000.

If US detecting, that's another situation.

With the GPX 4500 available in Australia I would like your opinion / help Looking at either getting one of these 4500 (new with warranty and 3 coils ) or would I be better off with  a GPX 5000  second hand ( 11 years old but in good condition as far as I can tell ) working with a small budget so can get a 5000 new .

Thanks for any help Roy

I would jump at a new 4500 without hesitation. A new GPX5000 is $2000 more ($5499 v $3499) and all you get is an extra timing or two on the 5000.

A three year warranty is the icing on the cake. So yes, (to me) a new 4500 is the clear winner.

Steve just posted the Reeds promotion on the 4500.....they are just down the road from me and I didn't need reminding again😁

I wanted to add that this whole "old 4500" v "new 4500" is largely irrelevant. The front input stage on the older 4500's had marginally higher gain but I don't know of many 4500 users who ran their 4500's anywhere near full gain anyway. I used to run mine at around 2/3 power and that was pushing things.

Just because the LCD readout shows a GAIN of 48 instead of 34 doesn't make it that much "Gainier"...it's not linear.

My car's speedometer maxes out at 240 km/h but I don't drive anywhere near those speeds (except when Reeds opens up for business this morning). As for modding the 4500/5000......I've seen blind tests between units and well, I'll leave it at that. 😑

“Reeds Prospecting 4 days ago  · YES, it's true, but they will only be available for a LIMITED TIME. Basically, when this last stock of GPX-4500 is gone, Minelab does not have plans to re-start production, so this is One-Off return for the GPX-4500, $3,499”

And just when I managed to convince myself that it was all just a dream 🤑

I see they include three coils with it but can't see which coils? I would assume 11 mono, 11 dd and a 15x12 of some type?

I wonder if they're leftover stock they withheld for warranty replacement reasons, and now with every 4500 likely out of warranty they're not needing them anymore.

Last October met a full time WA prospector ( Feb to end of Sep) in Tarnagulla ( Vic) with his F250 and fully setup Off road Caravan, he had an Internet setup so his partner could run her business anywhere in the outback. He was not short of a $ or 2.

He used a 7000 and a 6000 and had just bought a 5000 for his partner and had his name down for the new 5000 to be modded. Undoubtedly he could have afforded a 6000 for his partner. This got me thinking do I get my 5000 modded or buy a 6000. Mates success with his 5000 mod and selling his 6 made the decision for me.

I am not trying to convince you on a 2nd hand 5000 as I think you are ready to buy the new 4500 regardless.

I'am  having a look at GPX 5000 tomorrow morning  (11 years old) with 2 extra coils  to check it out and another one is about hour and  half drive to ckech out if I need too but it's a similar  age as well and both around the same price as the 4500 that's new with warranty  so I'm  still on the fence  to some degree  but leaning  a little one way  but hoping  for some good advice  here so I can make the best informed decision  gir me as have limited  funds.

The batteries a big concern at that age, run time would be diminished.  They're very expensive too but can be quite easily repacked.

I've been told:

1 x 11" Mono

1 x 11" DD

1 x 15"x12" Mono

I'm assuming this is standard across dealers.
