Aureous
The audio from Micks microphone is atrocious and the video'ing is less than ideal, but you'll get the gist. To be fair, Micks 5000 has an audio booster with speaker so it is a lot louder....but the benefits of the mods are obvious. phrunt
It certainly screams on the targets but sounds like it quietly falses a lot on the normal surrounding ground, I wonder how well it goes on targets that are not screamers where you have to concentrate to get the little weak target signals. These mods are very interesting though, I'm a bit annoyed I got rid of my 4500 as I'd get it modded and leave my 5000 alone. I don't want just a modded machine, a modded machine was recently for sale in NZ but I didn't notice it. JW bid on it but didn't take it seriously in his bidding so missed out. He already has a modded 4500 though but older mods, never really uses it. Reading some of the comments Mick said this, The most common issue is the grounding (well not grounded) of the case and front panel. This gets fixed on every detector that comes across my bench along with most of the coil sockets. I found that with my 4500, they had painted the entire outer shell so it wasn't grounded, my 5000 was not like this so Minelab picked up on it in later builds. Fixing it caused a very noticeable increase in stability, puzzles me how Minelab make these mistakes. 5 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27912-gpx-5000-mods-video/#findComment-292742 Share on other sites
Tony
I'm still 50/50 on modded detectors. Is there such a thing as a "free lunch". What is clear is the added sensitivity/depth on targets along with the extra ground response. Can you mentally hunt like that all day? Having said what I've said, Mick is the only one that I would have mod my GP3500. I need to take a look at the grounding on my 3500 case as I'm sure it's painted over. Tony
Probably the aspect that puts me off is that any actual "target sound" is now matched by the adjacent ground "ground noise? / target noise?". Very rare to see a modded detector that is actually quiet on its approach to a target (that it can now detect with increased GAIN).........GAIN just can't differentiate between a target and ground noise. The added extra gain control is what can alleviate the ground noise, you simply adjust it to suit the ground. He is also in fixed GB instead of tracking, which is why you see him GB in one instance. To give you an example of why I am 'pro mod', I owned a 2nd 4500 for several years and it would sniff out maybe an ounce each year....less in the 2 years prior to me getting a shoulder operation. Once I had my operation and recovered, I took the opportunity to get Mick to mod it up (2018) and I hit all my old spots no more than 10km from home. Prior to me selling it to get a 6000, that modded 4500 gave me perhaps 13 ounces in just over 2 years! All in areas I'd flogged for decades. That was Micks L3 mods, which have now been surpassed. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27912-gpx-5000-mods-video/#findComment-292749 Share on other sites

I haven't heard that before......I'm definitely not saying it's an untruth but it sure goes against everything I "thought" I knew about detectors. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27912-gpx-5000-mods-video/#findComment-292750 Share on other sites
Aureous
Sorry I forgot to add the adjustment text, so i edited it. Its a simple adjustment, rather like matching the detector to the ground conditions as per ground balancing. A balancing act, if you will..... Tony
Okay, I'm with you know....phew. "Added extra (GAIN) control". 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27912-gpx-5000-mods-video/#findComment-292752 Share on other sites
Tony
Got me thinking......when I had a 4500 many years ago, I could never run it past about 2/3 GAIN.....even in moderate ground. I'm wondering where (ground) the extra GAIN (from mods) would be of any use? I know that GAIN mods are done on the front end input stage.......and the GAIN setting on stock 4500's are taken care of further "downstream". Therefore the GAIN range on a stock 4500 is relative to its front input stage but that was always more than enough from my detecting here in WA. The speedo on my 76 Landcruiser goes to 220kmh but things start getting sketchy at 110kmh 🤪 I'm only ever using 50% of its GAIN......🤣 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27912-gpx-5000-mods-video/#findComment-292753 Share on other sites
