Earl
Well, Bill, that was many years ago and a long story. My stepfather worked for a liquid gas company in the desert, and we went once to one of the owners to visit. He was retired at 55, and I thought that was great and something I would like to do. I said to him, "What do you do with your free time then?" He answered and said, "Well, we travel around a lot on my camper, and I search for stuff." What do you mean search, what stuff, and how? He told me about metal detecting to find coins and metal stuff. Well, I had never heard about metal detecting, but, wow, if I could do that, I would also be rich (ha ha). I asked how you do that, and he said come with me. We went to the large garage, and he said there are my metal detectors!. He had a whole series of them on the wall. Is that what you use to find coins? He picked one from the row, and we went outside on the grass. He got a coin out of his pocket and threw it in the grass. He turned on the thing and walked that way, swining the detector, and later it peeped, and he got the coin out of the grass. Wow! And he then threw the coin further up and put the thing in my hand. Find it! Well, I did that and found it! I said I want to buy one of these things; it seems like fun. "No way, take this one," and eventually I agreed; he said it's an old one, and I have pleanty. Later in July, our family went on our vacation fishing in the high Sierras, and I took the detector with me. We went every once in a while to a lake high up the mountain where a gold mine was back in those days, climbing a steep track for a long time. Of course I wanted to find gold. But no luck. There were a lot of old small buildings there; I even found papers with numbers and such. I searched with the detector and found these coins scattered there under some boards, which I think was the floor back then. Don't remember the detector's name. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27997-my-indian-head-pennies/#findComment-293640 Share on other sites
