Popular Post Lead Detector
Out gold prospecting with the Manticore today and out popped this general service button. I wasn't disappointed. Coolest find of the day for me. 22 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28147-i-wasn%E2%80%99t-looking-for-it-but-i-found-my-first/ Share on other sites
Detecting with CM
I've found a eagle button too; though it might have been smaller and gilted. Do you think yours is Civil War Era? My button might have been 1850-1935. I really don't know much about this stuff. It is cool though 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28147-i-wasn%E2%80%99t-looking-for-it-but-i-found-my-first/#findComment-294976 Share on other sites

Bob S.
Not seeing the backmark, but I can say the front is definitely 2-piece Civil War Union Army in design. Eagle's head to its right, wings pointed upward high. Later Indian War period buttons had the eagle wings less high and the stamping was not as refined. If you can read a backmark, I can tell you more. Some issues were plain "tin backs", while others had no manufacturer's marks. The higher the quality of manufacture the back was usually made of brass and the maker's name was a raised mark in a circular depressed channel and the loop (shank) was brazed in. 3 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28147-i-wasn%E2%80%99t-looking-for-it-but-i-found-my-first/#findComment-294995 Share on other sites

NJ Art
Great shape it is, nice find. Scovill MFG CO WATERBURY. Small lettering 1850 to 1870. Large lettered b/m's (backmarks) 1870. Yours is the large lettering 1870 on. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28147-i-wasn%E2%80%99t-looking-for-it-but-i-found-my-first/#findComment-295094 Share on other sites
