Hi peeps,

I  have been doing some research and found from old newspapers about a few locations such as 'xxx gully', 'xxx hill' 'xxx' flat etc. when they mentioned in newspapers back from 1895-1940s.

I have been using Geoiew's topo map and still was unable to locate above places. Maybe too small?  I wonder if there is any old topo map or anything that could help us to locate the places?

Thank you,

Ethan

If you know the region, these names will often appear on Tengraph. A lotta times, these regional-contemporary names will fade into obscurity and never be written down on a map. If you can find it, there was a book published called 'Alphabetical index to the 1954 list of cancelled gold mining leases: Which have produced gold' by Peter Bridge. It contains heaps of non standard place names with a lot of data from relatively unknown localities. A very useful book for WA

I often research old mining diagrams and maps of a general area to piece together the exact location of a gully, creek or hill mentioned in old newspapers.

Mining company reports have also been a good source of information as they have spent $$ researching the very same information I'm after. Many times, they post maps and other related information about the area within their reports. For me, their detailed research into the geology of the area is what I'm more interested in.

Once I read about a rich gully in a TROVE newspaper, but struggled to find any other information about it anywhere. One day I came across an old hand-drawn map that mentioned the so-called gully along with a reference to another river nearby that helped pinpoint where the gully was.

All the information anyone needs is usually available online, one just needs the time and determination to find it.

If you have, can I have a copy of the SS. ( Would not he a problem for me, in my heyday, but thats long gone)
