  • The title was changed to Looking For Best Gold Only Detector

Welcome to the forum. There is no such thing as a “gold only” detector as all metal detectors find all metals. There are however detectors that specialize in nugget detecting, and the AT Gold, despite the name, is not one of them. It’s a general purpose coin, relic, jewelry and nugget machine, and quite an old model. Garrett themselves would tell you their Goldmaster 24K is the better choice, and it is, especially for Alaska. The Minelab Gold Monster is a popular alternative to also look at.

Steve thank you for the info.  I bought the Goldmaster and the battery pack compartment would not hold into place so had to return it.  Will get another one and take chance it works correctly.  I wanted to mention that a relative of yours was my supervisor his first name was Jeff and he showed me the 2oz gold rock he got from here in AK I guess on an adventure with you.

I have a White's GMT. Have had some good luck with it. Found a sub grain piece of gold with it in Quartzsite, Arizona recently. Found a .71 gram nugget in Wickenburg with my First gen machine.

My next detector will be the Minelab Goldmonster. My buddy has one and has had great success with it.

I just really appreciate the ongoing updates Steve puts out on the state of the gold sniffing machines. I read and re-read and am finally homing in on a gold only machine after years of running multi-use machines. I think my manticore will generally do great in the gold fields, but as Steve suggests, "look at what the locals are using" and when gold is the target of choice, few are running the multi-use machines and I am anxious to try a PI now that the price is down and the simplicity is up...thanks steve
