Detecting with CM
That is a ton of dimes! Does anybody know how full the 18-wheeler was with that many dimes? Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28281-millions-of-dimes-spill/#findComment-295924 Share on other sites
TheDeepseeker
It's kind of ironic that the truck couldn't turn on a dime without going over 😏 But the roadside could be a good place to detect for some years to come 😀 1 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28281-millions-of-dimes-spill/#findComment-295925 Share on other sites

Weight-wise it was close to maximum allowable limit for a USA highway (when the weight of the vehicle is included) -- 40 tons total weight limit with the empty truck being almost half of that. 8,000,000 dimes weighs about 20 tons. In terms of volume, though, not even close to full. To get an idea, suppose the dimes were neatly packed in a rectangular pattern to fully cover the floor of a standard box trailer. Start with a single dime layer (about 130,000 dimes). A dime has a diameter of 0.7 inches and the floor of the trailer is 628 inches long 102 inches wide. Next, add more layers with a similar geometric pattern. It would only take 61.5 layers to accommodate 8,000,000 dimes. A roll of (50) dimes is ~2.5 inches tall so if the trailer were packed this way it would only be filled a bit over 3 inches in height! Apparently the dimes were loose so the packing efficiency isn't as good as just calculated, but the pile (if more/less evenly spread out) still probably less than half a foot high. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28281-millions-of-dimes-spill/#findComment-296280 Share on other sites
Detecting with CM
So that truck was only at about ~ 5% capacity. Full capacity about ~ 170,000,000 dimes! Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28281-millions-of-dimes-spill/#findComment-296294 Share on other sites
