This is only about the difference in algorithms. As far as I’m concerned, they’re all great machines. Discovered this by accident. This also shows why the previous version had that extremely weird problem, locking onto one ID.

Test, nickel 3 inches in front of aluminum cap. Moving forward over the nickel and then both.

Manticore, X-Terra Pro, Legend and Deus 1; all behave the same. The IDs and tones gradually change when you start to get a mixed signal.

The Vortex doesn’t. It holds onto the ID.  At some point, it will make a decision and jump to another ID. It has to do this because of the screen. It has to pick an average value to put the dot on the screen, otherwise, it would be just a smear.

If you swing parallel to the nickel and cap, the Vortex sometimes will show both targets. The Manticore will show a smear because it’s an instant reaction.

Not addressing pros or cons, just difference. You can’t expect the Vortex to behave like another detector because it’s a different algorithm.

Some say the Vortex has a problem next to large targets in a video. I respectively disagree. Pretty sure I could hear it hitting some of those targets due to change in tone and density.

A good test on any detector, especially modern digitally processed multi tone units is along that line but concerns Discrimination.  If you have 2 targets under the coil at the same time, one accepted and one rejected, will the unit alert on the accepted target?  How quickly will it boil the signal down and respond?  Does it give the proper Tone & TID or does it drop?  Will the unit pass this test if the two target’s conductivity are close or do they have to be widely different?  Think pull tab & Nickel  or nail & Dime.  You can run all kinds of scenarios to simulate your hunting conditions.  This sort of testing is very helpful in setting up not only Disc points but also Tone breaks and Tone bins.   Hunting in iron trash is much more forgiving than hunting in modern Aluminum trash.   You better know how your detector reacts and you better have it set up properly or you are going to miss a lot of good targets.
