Popular Post tboykin
Hey guys. I got away for a few days last weekend to Baker and Grant County in Eastern Oregon. The area has a great multicultural gold history with several eras of miners, including a largely unrecorded history of Chinese gold miners. The earliest gold strikes happened in the 1860s, which is quite a bit later than the ones in Southern Oregon and the Sierras of California. After Anglo miners gave up the ground for richer pastures it was turned over to the Chinese. Now every time I have detected with old timers, they always say that the Chinese were thorough gold miners and didn’t leave much behind. On this trip I found that to be mostly true. But I also brought home enough gold to pay for at least my fuel. To me that’s a successful outing! Here’s my finds for the weekend, but you’ll have to be as patient as a prospector if you want to see me find them all. I’ll be posting weekly for the next five weeks if Steve is ok with that. I lugged some camera gear along with me which limited my detecting time but also mixed things up a bit. It’s been fun to combine prospecting and video production, but I miss my buddy Josh and will be headed down to Southern Oregon later this month to at the very least make some good memories (if not find some nuggets). 22 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/ Share on other sites
mntnflyr4fun
over 4 min of b.s, then 30sec of detecting then more b.s. Personally I have videos made by wannabe movie stars instead of detectorists..... Sorry for the honesty, but I wouldn't wast to much bandwidth posting this stuff.... 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296670 Share on other sites
tboykin
You don’t have to apologize for your opinion, I appreciate the honesty. I don’t really like watching 20 min videos of targets being dug up, but I get that some people do. I’m still pretty green as a detectorist. I have only been doing it for about 9 years. I did design a detector called the GM24k, and I have a few oz of gold I’ve found with detectors. But still lots to learn! 8 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296678 Share on other sites
Jim in Idaho
Hey, Tom...looks like you did pretty good. I'd be happy with that result! Jim 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296680 Share on other sites
phrunt
Thanks for the post and video, interesting to someone from far away. The good thing about Youtube videos is nobody is forced to watch them, you can choose to watch or not. A lot of effort goes into making videos like this one for those interested, and the people that aren't can just not watch them. I'm lazy with my videos when I do one, no editing, no fancy stuff, just a raw mess of video, nothing like the effort gone into this one. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296681 Share on other sites

Jim Yeah if I can pay for my fuel on the bad days, the good days end up being at least profitable. Plus I picked up a few claims on this outing. Staking claims costs money but are at least considered “real property” in the states. At this point my detectors are paid off from the gold I’ve found. Still a long ways to go to be a real detectorist. Maybe some day if I can keep learning from guys who are smarter than me (which describes 99% of people). 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296682 Share on other sites

If I want to experience 8 hours of digging square nails and 5 minutes of digging actual gold, that means I need to get in my truck and get out there. That's one of the great things about video editing - you can cut out all the fat, gristle, and offal to get a nice steak. 5 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296721 Share on other sites
Zincoln
Appreciate it Tom. Should be a fun watch. I appreciate a little of the editorial along the way. You are a humble man. I chuckled at the little comment on the 24k. Nice to see you hunting in my neck of the woods! 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28353-eastern-oregon-gold-nuggets-video-series/#findComment-296819 Share on other sites
