. The audio response is really loud with the target close to the coil and then drops off rapidly to nothing. It's not gradual at all. Raising the audio response setting does not help. Neither does changing the audio type.

That sounds like the Deus 1 for me.

So, in the case of the Deus 2 it's the ground handling in this particularly bad ground letting it down more than the smaller target sensitivity seeing it's performing well in the air tests?

I have a bit of trouble relating to this being in milder soil as for me a 19kHz detector would find just about all of those nuggets quite easily, if not all of them at those depths.

All the air testing and in the ground testing that I did with Deus 1 and the ORX with HF elliptical coil was excellent and basically on par with the Equinox 800 as far as sensitivity in mild to moderately mineralized ground.

I noted a problem almost immediately after getting my Deus 2 with 9" and reported it here. Basically Deus 1, ORX and Deus 2 Mono and definitely the Equinox 800 were obviously more sensitive to sub 0.25 gram and smaller targets than FMF Goldfield on air tests and in the ground test. That gap has shrunk some with the HF 2 coil from the videos I've seen. But we also had the release of the Equinox 900, Legend and Manticore since Deus 2 was released. That competitive gap has not shrunk enough yet between those detectors and the lagging Deus 2 for small gold prospecting.

Some people don't get the point about micro gold jewelry or small nugget prospecting. I know you get it. I am just happy to find some gold. It doesn't matter how big or small it is.

I guess what we are all hoping is one tool to rule them all, it never seems to happen 🙂 It would be great if the Deus 2 was on par with the others at gold prospecting, but then again it would be great if the others were on par with the Deus 2 when it comes to its strong points.  There to this day is no total best detector across the board so owning a few seems to be the way for some time yet.

We shouldn't complain I guess, these SMF units have dramatically cut down how many detectors are the ideal amount to own.

I'm happy finding any gold too Jeff, big or microscopic it all brings the same thrill for me, I'm not in it for the financial gain, in fact I'll likely always be running at a massive loss :)

Somebody please try it at discrimination -6, zero filters. On Deus 1, Hot program. Manticore white screen, zero filters. Open the detectors all the way up, that’s the starting point.

In this video, he lowers discrim to 3 and it does better. Why not lower it all the way and see what happens?

The Manticore hit the target but there was no sound because it’s notched out.

The Deus may be hitting the target but can’t tell unless you turn discrim all the way down, -6.

A similar test has been done in the past on the same type ground and the only detector that could detect what was in the dirt over what they were getting with the other two and that was the Tarsacci.

That video that I’m talking about is on one of the forums on here.

Maybe one day we won’t need but one detector that will do it all . I guess that’s why we keep all these detector companies in business because they can’t.

Because GOLDFIELD (and RELIC) which is the program you are supposed to use for gold prospecting DOES NOT use standard discrimination like that used on the General detecting programs because it uses a different pseudo All Metal target processing.

Gold gets pulled down into the iron in some conditions. If you want to hit gold that may get pulled down into the iron range, you’d better turn discrimination all the way down, -6, to see what the detector will do. Use whatever mode gives you the best shot, zero filters.

As an example, the Manticore in the above video is hitting the nickel, but it’s notched out. Not a good idea to notch where the nickel may be hitting in extreme conditions.

After you see what the detector will do wide open as you can get it, then you can make decisions.

Appreciate your advice on how to optimally operate the Deus 2 and the tutorial on gold target down averaging, but did you actually read my post that you quoted?

GOLDFIELD as a prospecting mode is purposefully set up with the intent of minimizing target filtering and therefore does not have target ID based discrimination.  It can't be adjusted down to "-6".  That setting does not exist in that mode.  GOLDFIELD is the mode Andrew was using in his video comparing the performance of the HF2 coil to Manticore.

The video you are referencing above by Southern Relic Adventures deals primarily with relic hunting and coinshooting modes such as General, Sensitive, and Deep HC which DO use an adjustable discrimination mode that can be adjusted lower than zero.
