Tidal Scour & Deposition

This is my third trip to the really small section that I located a few months ago. The area is a confluence of tides and a raised area of clay that is a dropping off point for metalwork. It became exposed to the eye very likely in storms late last year.

Using my favourite M8 coil on the Manti, I carefully worked the really small area several times from all angles after removing some bigger iron I hadn't done last time. This was the answer as it very often is, many more targets appeared both with the detector & picked by eye.

Like before, I detected some metal slags & a couple of higher conductive stones which were copper rich. I broke one at home, its Chalcopyrite (photo 3) There are copper deposits within an hour of here & iron too. I'm still thinking either an old smelting area or boat ballast. Really interesting.

The were masses of tiny non-ferrous as well as coinage including a small Roman issue from the 330's AD (photo 5) Other coins were right up to the 1980's. Seemed to tail off then, I still think after a massive storm winnowed the metal in the area to this spot & it stopped there. Plenty of Haematite too as is common in these places. In photo 4, you can see a group of shotgun pellets and other bits nicely graded by the sea.

Two interesting items were the lead 'caps' which are actually from very early wooden powder flasks pre-1700 for matchlock muskets. A .72 cal ball seems to be right for that era as well. A single 1905 sixpence was the only silver only located after removing ironwork, as so many targets were.

Last two photos show the rich Haematite areas with plenty of small non-ferrous mixed in. The last photo in the are a couple of that ore in Botryoidal form known as kidney ore, prime source of iron.

I really find this type of hunting my favourite, I was shown these skills by my old friend who had such great knowledge about so many subjects. He would be happy to know I still carry on his skills all these years later.

Nice assortment of finds and a huge span of years between the oldest and the newest. The iron rich stones are very interesting and must cause a lot of masking on good targets. Congrats on another job well done!
