Popular Post stupot
Spent a while looking around a favourite spot. There was just too much sand about to be able to reach the black layer above the clay which holds the stuff we search for. Just a couple of coins below the seawall. I decided to put some effort in on the lowest spot I could see. Dug away some of the bigger stones & iron plus loose sand to reach the black layer several inches underneath. Started finding big old fishing weights - most have been removed by me over time. Going down to the deeper layer plenty of coins appeared too, along with plenty of non-ferrous pieces quickly located with the M8 coil. Pretty much at the deepest part in the hole out came a biggish gold ring detected as the tide started lapping towards the excavation. I knew it was old & high k. It turned out to be a really interesting ring inscribed. It belonged to a relative, likely father, of a Captain in the 103 Regiment who died in 1869. Research is currently underway. The Regiment spent most of its time in India. Needless to say, I returned the next day to try & expand the excavation. It was difficult as some of the stone blocks were very difficult to remove. A few more weights showed up along with several coins including an Argentinian silver from 1898. A more modern Italian pendant pretty much was the last target I detected. Watching the tide wash the black digging mound I spotted another discoloured ring. This one had a really decent Opal - one of my favourite stones. The purity is 8k, likely German. Not sure of age, but has to be teens or much earlier. This spot has consistently given some really interesting & different finds over years. Pretty much all of the coinage is scrap as very corroded except for a few deep ones on the clay. Its just great fun & I enjoy the detecting skills & Manti detector technology. 17 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28744-black-holes-old-gold/ Share on other sites

TampaBayBrad
I would have to be real sure it's a good target before digging that hole! Nice reward for you're trouble. Old gold has that "different" look. Congrats. That's a monster chain in the background of that pic. 😯 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/28744-black-holes-old-gold/#findComment-299566 Share on other sites
