This forum is named the Fisher Impulse Forum and for anybody here that basically means the Fisher Impulse AQ released in 2022. However, the Fisher Impulse name goes back to 1985 and the original Fisher Impulse designed by famed Fisher engineer David Johnson, no doubt with help from others on the team. The Impulse was a very simple pulse induction model with minimal controls and built like a tank, waterproof to 250 feet. It was unique in that it featured a new method that Dave came up with for scavenging the energy wasted in PI flyback to offer a greatly extended battery life.

IMPULSE Deep-seeking, submersible, pulse-induction metal detector with liquid-crystal display, target LED and long battery life

The IMPULSE is a pulse induction metal detector that offers all the advantages of pulse induction technology -  like increased depth penetration and increased ability to operate in salt water - but eliminates the disadvantages sometimes associated with pulse induction metal detectors. Most P.I. detectors have excessive battery drain and many require constant threshold tuning or operate only in a 'motion' mode. In contrast, the IMPULSE requires no motion, has a stable threshold and gets over 100 hours of use on one set of batteries. The IMPULSE features two visual target indicators: a large liquid crystal display and a light-emitting diode. The VCO audio signal rises in pitch and volume as the search coil nears the target.

I have only ever seen one of these in action back in the early 90's. The guy using it loved it but I recall him saying something about needing a "third hand".....I guess he meant one hand for the detector, one to hold his scoop and an extra hand to keep the tune control knob tweaked ?
