Hi Vicki,

Welcome! I enjoy using a mineral UV light to look for fluorescent minerals in the desert, but don’t have much experience with using UV light on gemstones. Reading up about your possible spinel specimen on the internet, I learned that blue diamonds like the Hope Diamond glow red like yours due to the presence of boron and nitrogen in them.  Well, as the Hope diamond was historically cut into smaller parts over the past few hundred years, perhaps yours is a smaller part of it?  Wouldn’t that be nice!  But ok, I did read that blue-colored spinels also emit red from UV lights due to chromium inside of them. So unfortunately, I don’t think you have a piece of the Hope Diamond, I think you probably have a spinel which are much more common but are interesting nonetheless!

Oh- according to this website, you can spot a fake or synthetic spinel by how brilliant its glow is beneath a black light. The showy ones are probably synthetic, especially if they contain very small gas bubbles inside them which natural ones are lacking.

Here’s an example of the types of minerals I like  to put under a black light- calcite and chalcedony. The red is from calcite, and the green is chalcedony. These I found in Arizona (scroll down on that page to my post on it).

Welcome aboard, Vicky. That's a pretty nice ring. The only spot I know with natural black light is DISCO. 😉😄
