i know Manticore does not have a true mixed mode audio, but coming from a Whites machine where I used it frequently to help me sniff for deep targets, I am wondering if anyone has come up with a setup to get the Manticore to work like a mixed mode machine

Not really sure about the effectiveness of this procedure, but I remind a post where in addition to all metal, iron volume at the same level of non ferrous IDs it was adopted...Steve can be much more detailed on this topic...Sorry

While I have no solution to arranging mixed-mode audio in a modern SMF digital detector, I can point to the origin of mixed-mode audio. The designer was a dear old friend, now deceased. His name was Jerry Tyndall of Nautilus Metal Detectors and the detector was his DMC, which stood for Dual Mode Circuit. A separate all-metal, non-motion, threshold dependent mode operating simultaneously with a separate synchronous phase motion-based discriminate mode. This combined operation was heard in either selected headphone stereo or mono. Stereo allowed all-metal audio in one ear cup and discriminate in the other... Or mono which allowed both shared (mixed) signals between two ears. I used it with great success hearing deep silver coins without the use of a target ID display. Simple, but rather ingenious concept created by a humble man revered by the relic hunting community, even to this day. I take special pride in Jerry asking me to design his logo, DMC detector panel graphics, and write a descriptive piece about DMC operation. I miss our long telephone conversations... R.I.P. Jerry.

Luc, who works as a Minelab tester, has a channel with useful settings for various detectors including the Manticore (scroll down).  He explains the stabilizer and other settings on a couple of the Manticore videos to adjust the tones and filters:

I was kinda hoping Steve might slip in here and comment as in the past he has been a great fan of Mixed Mode and one of his old posts stated he wouldn't want a detector without MM so was thinking that being as he has a Manti he might have come up with a way to simulate MM.... I appreciate your insight...

I got hooked on Mixed Mode, and the live threshold using my MXT series ( I have owned a bunch of them) and now find it somewhat limited not to have that threshold and mixed mode to sniff deep targets. I am not sure for instance with my Manticore how to tell there are unreported targets under the coil (hence my original question). Maybe I just don't have enough time on the Manti yet....

I just did some research using AI and it doesn't seem to find any current detectors that produce a true threshold, so no mixed mode audio either.

I wonder why manufacturers have dropped the mixed mode/true threshold from their machines? Seems like a net takeaway to me to lose such a valuable feature.... I do see that prospecting and gold modes and most dedicated gold machinesstill have a true threshold, so why not use the same for the discriminate modes to provide the mixed mode audio?

Probably just me as I am old school. Just hate it when functionality disappears for no good reason as hunting parks etc. I hesitate to use prospecting modes with no discrimination because of the obvious trash issues just to get a true threshold.... I guess I just need to get over it....

I had a Whites XLT in the 90's and remember playing around with mix mode. I remember it being a bit overwhelming back then. It seemed like we were shooting for TID accuracy with quiet hunting back then...or at least the group I was hunting with back then preferred this.

Nowadays, I've trained my brain and ears to run a detector hot, all metal or very little discrimination. I would love to give mix mode a try again.

Mixed Mode is indeed a great feature to have in quite a few hunting situations.  Since Whites left the scene, the only units I know of that offer Mixed Mode are from Rutus and Tarsacci.  They both use a Motion based All Metal channel, not a static one.   I think all Flagship detectors should offer a Mixed Mode.

If anyone is interested, I can look around for the piece I wrote on the Nautilus DMC Mixed Mode function and post it here as an attached file (?). It might offer some insight to the validity for future iterations of the concept.
