I am looking for a low cost (used higher end prefereably over something just cheap) detector to keep in the trunk of my car so I always have one with me. Not going to get used alot so don't want to put a bunch of $$ into it, but when I come across a spot that looks promising and don't have my manficore along I would like something that has some capabilities and won't require a learning curve to remember how to use it...

Basically a simple, well performing favorite that can hang around for use a couple times a year......

Might want to give a price range you're shooting for.

In the used market, there *should* be ML Equinoxes (both 600 and 800) available for reasonable prices since they've been superseded by the 700, 900, and Manticore.  Operationally (and performancewise) those are pretty close to the Manticore.

I feel you're going to get a lot of suggestions so buckle your seatbelt!  😏

I purchased a used Vanquish 340 for this purpose. Got it off of FB Market for $100. Just a cheap beater detector with limited features, but it still performs well. Being such a simple machine, it can also double as a loaner for whenever a property owner or guest wants to try metal detecting.

I agree with GB for a price range, but saying that, you have a wide range to choose from! My personal favorites for simple and light are near most of the Tesoro's; because i already have them, and several other brands! You can find some good deals on Ebay, if you are not looking for a "mint" classic! But also, many near new Nokta's, Garrett's, etc. will be of similar price, so weigh your needed options carefully!

Heat and shock are the enemies of sensitive electronics, and some plastics, that are not made for extreme (automotive) temperatures, so you may need to provide a protective case/ thermal barrier for storage in your trunk! And definitely keep your batteries separate and protected too! Especially 9 volts, they are fire starters!

Good luck in whatever you decide, and have fun in those spontaneous detecting spots!🍀👍👍

Hi. In this case of your need to have it inside the car, "TRUNK", I'd recommend a machine without a display. Just my 2 pennies.

Good thought.....It will be riding around and gathering heat thats for sure......

One thing I remember about the Equinox 600 was that the display didn't work well with a cover on it on a hot day. 🤔 Completely blanked out. When I took the cover off it worked again after it cooled down.

Analog machines like the gold bug 2 or the lower frequency gold bug have survived bouncing around in people’s side-by-sides and trunks for a long time…. Some of the older GP detectors, which are still expensive, are also probably pretty good for that.

I've got a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger Pro (kissin cousin to the Fisher F-19) that fits the bill for your "wants".----I purchased it new & paid $190 (delivered) for it.---Has the 7"X11" DD coil (excellent coil on it IMO)---I call it the "Halibut coil". :)—-5 Year Warranty---I don't want to sell the unit---just making you aware of it as a possibility for your needs in that regard.------Del
