I figured I'd take a look at the action going on with Minelab and patents with the pending release of the GM2000 and the possible other new gold detector(s) coming

You can look at it here, just use Minelab as the search word.

A coil being patented, interesting!

With no wireless audio do they even need to do the FCC testing for the USA sales?

Yes, you have to test for EMI emissions, both intentional and unintentional. This is true in practically all countries. If you have ITMD3 then see 28.3.

Now wouldn't it be a hoot if they had copied X-coil and patented it? 🤣🤣

As Carl just stated, ANY detector is basically a transmitter, therefore yeah, FCC testing.

Yes - there have been reported sightings of a strange looking coil being tested in Victoria. Patent a new tech coil and you can further protect you intellectual property (and increase your gross margins).

Instead of searching "Minelab" type in "Metal Detectors" so it brings up AlgoForce, Nokta Etc. Over the last 5 years Minelab have had 9 patents granted (most from or includes Bruce Candy as the developer) - during the same time Zero granted to any other companies. It really does show how much time, money and effort Minelab put into R&D.

Assuming that you clicked on the link that Phrunt provided that only shows Australian patents.  I think....

Correct - the link goes to IP Australia where you can search for patents, trade marks and design patents. The major players would apply for the same patents in more than one jurisdiction to get the level of protection they require.
