Shield Nickel Today

Chris and I took advantage of the great November weather we're having, and went coin/relic hunting in the backcountry. Found a couple dozen old cartridges, including a ,22 Hornet, and several 30-40 Krags, and others. I also found my oldest coin to date...a Shield  nickel of either 1866, or '67. The date is unreadable, but it has the 'rays', which were eliminated after 1867, so one of those two years. I was using the Deeptech Vista warrior..the coin was about 5" deep in the dirt and gravel...right in one of the ruts of the two-track. Amazing it was unbent.

Very nice. That one is in pretty good shape for that type of coin.  Glad you got out with your friend and the Warrior.

Not to put too fine a point on it, JCR, but Chris is my wife, and best friend, and has been for just short of 53 years...LOL. That nickel is pretty worn, but considering how difficult it is to find any in the places we detect, I'll take it.
