  • The title was changed to LA Times Coverage Of Attempts To Wrest Goldmine Back From Cartel Control

I was amazed at the amount of placer gold the cartels were pulling out. Very impressive for an old mine. I wonder if the native americans mined it before the spaniards...

I wouldn't have done what this guy did and still does, unbelievably dangerous. It's crazy money to make but.....

There isn't any business the cartels don't get a piece of. Everything from oil to avocados.

I've hunted gold in Mexico off and on for 30 years. You have always been expected to pay a "cuota" to the local power brokers to prospect. That much hasn't changed.

The "cartels" don't bother with gringos looking for gold. They shake down businesses. The local badasses are the guys a detectorist needs to worry about.

A life is not worth much down there. You have to make a deal with the right guy or you will have to make deals with everyone below him and then make him happy too.

Don't detect in Mexico but still not all that far from where I do in Az.

My buddy and I spent several days prospecting around Arivaca, AZ. years ago. We spent the nights sleeping in the desert and didn't find any gold, only a lot of howling coyotes at night.
