Over the Thanksgiving holiday I was given a Vanquish 540 by a family member who helped run my gold dredge over 40 years ago in the California mother lode.  He retired and is traveling in his RV.  He used it once and decided to buy a Manticore and said he didn’t have room for both.

Ive yet to test it out but I think I’ll give it to my grandson.  I have a few loner detectors and he asked about going out to detect.  I looked into it on Minelab’s website and it seems like a very good detector.  I noted in this forum how if it gets noisy on mineralized ground to notch out -7 -8 -9 as needed.  I live in Nevada and quite a lot of ground is high in magnetite so I’ll see how it acts.  I think he’ll like it!

It is a surprisingly good detector for relics and coins/rings.

I bought a used one a few months back basically as a "grand kid" detector.  I took it up to Utah this Thanksgiving weekend for my grandson to use while I am getting the hang of the new GM2000.  They have an old park behind his house which was great to detect.  He's 5 years old and I really like all the adjustably of the arm cuff and the coil.  Within about 10 minutes he found a thin 925 Silver ring with turquoise stone about 2" under grass and dirt.  It was a great find for him and he's going to give it to his mom for Christmas.  I was surprised at all the features on the 540 for an "entry level" detector.

Side note, I'm amazed at the tiny pieces of foil the GM2000 was finding.  I also found a coin drop that produced 6 coins about 5" deep with one nickel from 1964.  They had been in the ground quite a while based on the corrosion.  Anyway the 540 is a surprising value as a kid or loaner detector I think.
