Where was the figure from? It doesn't sound right to me.  Maybe if VLF's are included.

My points remain valid, most companies selling product to the US have to pay tariffs, so they are competing against each other in those countries, AND the price they sell coils for is more than enough to make a profit, so even if their net is less selling to the US it still adds to income and keeps the volume up to keep material prices low, Thus there is really no reason to not absorb some of the tariff and sell to the US.

IF the US Companies were smart they would start producing comparable or better coils at lower prices than the imports, that's called competition..!

Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the manufacturer. The coil producer sells their coils at the same price as they have before tariffs were introduced, but the importer then has to pay the tariff to the USA government. This means that money raised by tariffs are collected from the USA importer, not the exporter. No money is raised from countries outside the USA but from the poor retailers in the USA, which means the money travels from USA companies to the USA government. It's an added tax.

The aim of tariffs is to penalise USA importers from importing and encourage them to buy from within the country. Fine in theory but not real good in practice, as if the local product is inferior to the imported one you are left with the choice of paying extra for the best (the importer has no choice but to pass on the increase to the consumer) or settling for an inferior local product.

Should the local manufacturer decide to lift their game to fall in line with the aim of tariffs, which is to force American producers to either abandon their overseas production facilities and return manufacturing to the USA, or expand or improve already existing production in America, it is going to take time to accomplish this transition. In the meantime I can't help but think that in the confusion many retailers in particular are going to find that the going will get tough.
