Differences In Depth Results Between The 9" - 11" And 11" - 13" Coils Of The Deus 2

Recommended Posts

From those who have tried all three coils, what real differences in depth results in air and on the ground (with coins) are there between the XP  9" - 11" coils and between the XP 11" - 13" of the Deus 2? Thanks

I can't speak for air testing I've never bothered with it. However in the  mineralized ground that I detect in I can't really tell any difference in depth at all with all three FMF coils. Their biggest differences are in separation. I detect a lot of iron patches. The 13-in coil in an open field finds the patch for me and the 9-in coil cleans it up. With the 13-in coil you're covering at least 2 more inches of ground per swing than the 11. Multiply that by the thousands of times he swing your detector during the days hunt and you have covered considerably more ground. Out of all four coils I have 11 inch gets used the least. Buy the way the 9 inch coil goes deep, deeper than any small coil by any other manufacturer I have ever used.

Because there are numerous factors that affect detection depth, trying to fine tune the difference among coils can be tricky at best.  One would need to establish the EXACT conditions to include soil type, target, target orientation in the ground, moisture content, EMI, mineralization...etc.  As for air testing, that isn't the way we detect so I've never put much, if any, credence in those results.  I always go by the Army philosophy I learned many years ago....Train as you Fight.   Do your testing (training) with targets in the ground, not in the air.

Just the view from my foxhole....

This is the impression I got from watching some official XPmetaldetectors videos on YouTube, especially the ground performance between the 9" and 11" coils (the 13" obviously didn't exist when I made the video). It seems like the 11" digs maybe a centimeter deeper into the ground than the 9" and it's not worth spending all that money for a centimeter.
I wonder if there's a real gain in depth between the 9" and the 13"...

Having used both the 9" and 13" coils, I feel that the 13" is somewhat deeper on most targets, but not substantially so. I've dug coin-sized objects nearly a foot down with the 9", which is great performance for a coil that size.

I mostly break out the 13" coil when I'm in a field/other large area that isn't too trashy and I want to cover as much ground as possible with each swing.

In short, I think the 13" is great for coverage. I don't think there's a dramatic depth difference between the two.

With the ORX, I settled on the 9" HF and the X 13" to get the benefit of of the spread of freqs 4kz - 55khz that offers a lot versatility. I never put the 13" on for ground coverage, have a GPX with the 15" for that, I use it where I swing the 9 HF for its lower freqs and extra punch in the ground. Both great coils.

I finally bought a 13" as new and I'm very satisfied with it, it really goes down a lot, I found a 1 cm button at 40 cm depth!
