From Crummy to Lunk…and Back Again!

For those of you who may not know, I was given the nickname “Crummy” early on in my detecting career because I was so proficient at locating the smallest crumbs of gold with my trusty Fisher Gold Bug 2. But eventually, after stepping up to a Minelab pulse induction SD 2100 gold detector, I earned the moniker of “Lunk” for finding the bigger and deeper “lunker” nuggets. Well now, with the advent of the Gold Monster 2000, it seems I've come full circle back to chasing the crumbs once again…and having a blast doing it, I might add! 🤩 I've been playing to the GM2k's strengths and targeting small, shallow gold in heavily mineralized and/or conductive ground in areas where I have found nuggets in the past; places where it's getting real tough to turn up a piece of gold anymore. Not so with this new beauty of a detector; I haven’t had a skunk day with it yet, not even close. There's not much I can add to what’s already been said about the Monster's performance in these conditions, other than it is utterly mind blowing.🤯 In these environments, with the sensitivity set to A2, both the Normal and Benign Ground Type modes are running at a sensitivity level of 2, while the Difficult mode is humming right along at 9 or 10. What is amazing to me is that although the Difficult Ground Type mode eliminates the conductive ground signal, yet it is still ultra sensitive to the smallest bits of gold - I'm talking flakes that will only register on a milligram scale. Traditionally, when you eliminate the conductive ground signal, small gold sensitivity is eliminated along with it. So there’s definitely some breakthrough technology at work in that regard. What I really love about the GM2k however, is that its triple discrimination system allows non-ferrous targets to be located quickly, while ferrous targets and hot rocks are easily identified and can thereby be ignored. In fact, it is so good, that after many hours behind the control pod and digging all non-ferrous targets, believe it or not, I can now discern the difference between a very small gold nugget and aluminum foil and lead fragments of the same conductivity number, making it even faster to isolate the gold amongst the trash targets. And that, my friends, equates to more weight in the poke at the end of the day.😉 There is no doubt - the GM2k is a revolutionary VLF gold detector.

Pictured below is over 17 grams of the good stuff recovered in difficult ground conditions in the placer gold deposits of northern Nevada and southwestern Arizona with my Gold Monster 2000.

Outstanding Lunk, that's awesome, it's so good to see the GM2000 in its element in that tough soil doing its magic.  The nuggets had no hope of hiding with you behind the wheel of that detector 🙂

Yah Simon, I've already burned through both of the supplied ice cream covers, and now I'm using a GM 1000 skid plate. It's a little larger, but nothing a couple wraps around the coil with electrical tape cannot fix.😉

No worries, Jonathan; I suppose I've collected enough crumbs with the Monster for now, and I have been itching to fire up the ol' Zed as of late…time to go lunker hunting again! Besides, if the skunk closes in towards the end of the day, the Monster will come out and scare it away! 😱

The GM2k sure likes the sun-bakers, and it’s found a few for me already. 😎These 2 were only a mere 18 inches apart, and the tip-off to a small nugget patch. Not virgin ground, either, as there is ample evidence of the area having been detected with VLFs back in the 1990's era. I understand how these pieces were missed, as the Monster was running at an A2 sensitivity of only 2 in both Normal and Benign Ground Type modes, while Difficult of course was cruising right along at 10.🤩
