Hello from Indonesia,

I’m looking for recommendation for a metal detector for gold nuggets detecting around active creeks/rivers alluvial gold locations in Indonesia.

Pros/cons maybe some links to YouTube videos. I’m about to learn effectively prospecting.

thank you AA

Hi Anna, What is your Budget for this Detector, to me if its around $2000 US or $3000 Australian (Aud),  I suggest a Gold Monster 2000, if its around $10,000 Aud, I suggest the best Minelab detector, the GPX6000. You may be able to purchase a 6000 second hand for around $7000 Aud.

Other Forum members may have different opinions, according to your Budget and whether you wish to submerge the detector.

From Mr Google:

The Minelab Gold Monster 2000 has a waterproof coil (up to 1 meter/3.3 feet) for detecting in shallow water and wet conditions, but the control pod is only rainproof (IP55-rated) , not fully waterproof, so it should not be submerged, only protected from rain and splashes. This design allows you to swing the coil underwater but keep the main electronics safe from heavy rain or spray.

Best bet is to read this to get an idea of the detectors available and their suitability.

If you need waterproof that really narrows down the list, and you may be better off with a multi-purpose machine like an Equinox 800/900  or Manticore if mineralization isn't too bad.  The SDC2300 is another option for waterproof if you have bad mineralization.  Most prospecting detectors aren't waterproof.

If you are going to use around water I would highly recommend fully waterproof. I've destroyed many thousands of dollars of electronic gear by accidental water dunking.

Yes I’m thinking about Gold Monster 2000 but considering SDC 2300.

Thanks for the link…. Will check it out.

What are the sizes of nuggets you can find there with a detector or sluice/panning?

Will you stop detecting if it rains while you are out or do you continue?

I’m new to it, but have seen some nuggets size 1-5 gram each. If not heavy rain then yes will continue. It’s raining often in Papua
