Trime Time

 I was finally able to get back on my early trade site/settlement permission at what I call Pecan Grove. It is off limits during deer season.  I spent 5 hours Saturday with my walk behind DR Field & Brush mower and cut down a good acre of shin high, tuffty rough pasture in an area that has produced in the past. I also mowed a good bit in some of the wooded area that was overgrown for searching later.  I went back Sunday and spent about another 5 hours hunting about half of the open field spot.  It was a good day.  Lots of small lead, both cast and camp. Some nice brass and cast bronze pieces, a pen knife(in 3 pieces) & parasol slide.  Almost every hole had some interesting glass or crockery and pieces of brick.  The finds of the day were both Silver and most unexpected.

The first up was a finger ring fashioned from strips cut from a coin then penned into an interlocked ring. The workmanship is quite crude but it certainly has character.  I can see no markings, so the coin must have been well worn. I wonder if it was a slick Spanish coin?  Very unique.

The second was equally unexpected, but should not have been, given the age of the site.  A Type 1 1852 Silver Trime, my first,  in VF condition as far as detail wear.  It was almost dark when I dug it scanning back to my truck.  I thought at first it was another Half Dime. I was very near where the 1842 and 1829 were found, however I soon realized this was even smaller and had a smooth rim.  If you look, the coin is slightly bent, and you can see slight teeth marks on both sides. I guess the old counterfeit test was a common thing after all.

 Over all, a very pleasant & memorable day on a special site for me.

 JCR ...Nice find, and yes, the silver coin found is pleasing... and also the silver ring... and the other finds create a nice context for the detection site..

Trime is a really small silver American coin,,, only the gold dollar of the old type is smaller....

Here is a photo to show the relative sizes.   Trime= 14mm diameter(atop a Copper Cent),  Half Dime= 15.5mm, with Copper 1 Cent.

 Also made a terrarium with the found bark fern.

Congrats on an the finds, 2 rare and unique pieces! I've mowed places before and it was worth it. 👍 Really great hunting, JCR. Trimes are always a thrill, and I'm glad you found one. 🍀

The dirt was chosen for it's history.  Thankfully it is very generous & kind to the relics.

   Sounds like you earned you finds, with the "yardwork"😏 I bet if you could sift that area, it would produce many more interesting items! I get the "resurrection" ferns that fall out of my large oak trees, and place them on an old log in my yard to keep growing!👍
