Yet Another Storm..

There has been a string of storms recently. Another hit our coast this last week with some incredibly high winds. Working out exactly where to go has to be thought about, some directions attack beaches much better than others. This time i changed thinking to try an old friend, this has been a good beach & pretty local to me.

One section always gets hit the hardest due to direction of wind & tide, added to by a 90 degree turn in the sea wall. Right at the base of the wall there was a good couple of hundred yards of clay & stone showing previously a foot of soft sand lay above it. Further along very deep sand showed where it had gone too, at least four feet over normal.

It wasn't difficult to find signals, first coin appeared in seconds. I ran the Manti with little change than I normally do. Some iron, but not enough to bother me at all. One section had more older coins than further along & it was here I concentrated the most.

I have learned a lot with this detector in over 2 years it has become part of me completely when I'm searching. Its menu layout & options are all intuitive, unlike a couple of other companies units. Running with no true disc but some upper ferrous is easy - it becomes natural to run very little with no ill effects, the ear does it all.

Four hours of systematic parallel lines covered a pretty big area with several silver coins showing - this beach was one of the most productive silver producers I've ever found. Just as I was leaving from the top of the sea wall, I could see a small patch of stones showing way out at the low water. Barely exposed by the tide, I knew this spot - last seen 10 years ago when I hit it with the CTX, its an old bed sat on peat & clay.

I went back two days later & expanded the top area I'd worked hard previously. More coins turned up including some incredibly deep ones just into the deeper sand layer outside of the eroded spot. The M9 coil has plenty of poke, as long as the area is clean, I can easily reach a foot & more on coins. Less coins showed as I predicted but a couple of silver came out including my favourite tiny threepence pieces, along with a Royal Artillery & Lancashire Fusiliers badges.

The last hour the tide barely dropped enough for me to very quickly scan the shingle edges at low water. I hit it really fast trying to get out the easy targets first, time i didnt have. Old stuff showed with three Victorian coppers & an earlier George III halfpenny. A couple of transitional musket balls (Brunswick Rifle) were interesting too, belted ball & octagonal ball. Well within the hour the tide ran fast over the stones in the dark. It was very cold & I'd frankly had enough, rain had fallen all day. Sometimes you  just have to stop, that's really hard for me  For the next 10 days that patch will be covered by the tide, I really hope its still shows when I can next get to it, it could be covered in sand once again. Its at the forefront of my mind, those CTX days gave me some fabulous old rings from it.

Great work, stupot. What I like the most about your posts is that beach hunting there is a relic hunt! I have run into that only in Virginia, came close to it here one day, but it was all ship copper. The beaches in Florida are heavily detected, you seem to have places where they are not, or you are a true master of the Art. 🏆 Brilliant.

Good example of a place that will always produce. But it all depends on conditions. Worked this beach first in 1980 as a boy. Heavily worked properly with pulse by good operators in mid eighties. 

Still very popular detecting venue today. But good old fasioned knowledge and experience is the answer. I'm the last of the old time beachcombers from the original group of six, because i was the youngest!

Was one of the most popular resort beaches from 1850 to 1970s. It shows in finds, occasionally.  A beach is alive, and i love it!
