"I Hope You Find A Big One"

Today in the late afternoon and early evening I managed to make it to a good beach with some nice targets.  I was using the M/11 and prepared to walk a long distance to find the random targets I expected on this beach.  I've been inspired by a couple of recent posts from F350 about his Florida experience.

I started with one of my 'normal' patterns which is to detect a low tide above the black sand line.  We've had a west swell for 3 days and the black sand line was clear.  This is not my normal beach, but I've found some goodies here before.  I was surprised there weren't other detectorists out or even their holes.  I'm assuming they went to other beaches on this warm, inviting afternoon with a clear sunset to be had.  The temperature was in the mid to high 70s with the Santa Annas.  

The first target was a penny and then a quarter, but things were really spread out.  I'd end up going about 2 miles in one direction before turning around.  About 30 minutes into the hunt one of the many people out on this warm day came up to me.  It was a Russian sounding guy about 6'2" and as I greeted him by taking off my headphones he asked me how often I hunt this beach.  Not very often I told him, but he said would you happen to have found a chain and a cross with 2 rings?  I said no, when did you lose it?  He said he lost it about a mile south of where we were in 2018!!! Wow!  How did he remember?  The two rings on the chain (he was wearing a similar gold Russian cross) were from his grandparents and he really has felt bad all these years.  I could understand.  I told him the name of a local who has hunted that beach for 50 plus years and told him to look up Ring Finders and perhaps post something on Treasure Net.  He had to ask his gf/wife to come over with her phone to take the info.  She had the figure of a model and was about 5'11" so it was a beautiful afternoon to start.  As we parted, he said, "I hope you find a big one."  I think you will see that I did.

The pattern I was using which was parallel to the low tide surf really wasn't working much.  About a mile into the walk, I moved lower to the wet edge on a zigzag and I found the silver ring!  That gave my attitude an adjustment.  I continued up the beach but focused on the 'wet line' which was still quite a way from the surf.  I was finding more coins at this level and then I found the cheap twisted ring.  This was my first two ring hunt in a while!  Then I found the little star in the same pattern/patch.  I was also finding the light aluminum pieces to keep me honest and the screws.  Just after sunset I turned back to where I had started following this same pattern and that is when I got the steel ring (I thought it was gold when I found it).  I was now going back over where I had come from, and I managed to get the 'ribbon' jewelry piece.

Now I was back where I started and all the people were gone.  I was 'ready' to leave but I still needed to check a couple of spots where I had found good jewelry before.  I tried the new wet pattern and the black sand line so on the way back out I needed to zigzag and then I got a target in the 40s.  This wasn't like some of the deep quarters which were iron grunts to start before I'd dig down 5 inches and they would ID properly.  I expected this target to be a 'moving' penny ID.  When I looked with my light at the 6" hole, I could see it was not a penny!

It is an 11.8g/18k Madona ring!  That made my night and the hunt.  It was in the 'normal' area above the black sand line, so it had either been pushed up from some bigger waves, or it had floated down from the blanket line when some of the bigger waves were going out.  Both things happen at this beach, and it does get a lot of use.  It doesn't have any initials to attempt a return.

The other rings are silver or Stainless/TungTanium? They look nice regardless, hope ya have a diamond tester. 😏 A ring is a ring. 🏆

Last night I joined @Joe D.'s metal detecting club, TCAS, Or Treasure Coast Archaeological Society. We had a special guest who is also a member, but that will be a post on its own. 😎 I expect we'll be back every year for my birthday, so I can pay my dues. 😅

The silver is marked 925 but also 'LG' which means to me Lab Grown!  The one ring is mostly copper, and the other 'shinny' is marked Steel.  The remainder is just bling.

Now that you've joined the club it gives you an 'excuse' to make that yearly plan.

We should start a thread with those people who have actually found a shipwreck item.  The only one that comes to mind is Peg here on the forum.

I've found lots of "shipwreck" type silver, but usually where ships "wrecked" in Northern Virginia farms. 😎🤣

I did score a 2 Maravedis copper on a beach in the Outer Banks last summer, that is a shipwreck coin. 1660s.
