Another Storm - Followup

I had to wait nearly 10 days before everything was right for me to head back to the exposed stone bed. Many thoughts hounded me that week, is it covered with sand? has someone else pounded it in the dark snowing or not? Its funny that certain places like this always get deep inside my mind when you know and you feel it... Even though I'm older now, I still get the same thoughts I had years ago!

Well dawn came on the day so I was there M9 & I waiting for that tide to drop. I could see the depression forming & finally a couple of feet of shingle & bigger stones, no change at all. Same thing happened last time I saw it years ago. It grew in size for weeks producing a rich harvest until it finally collapsed & the sand filled it in.

The bed had a tilt in it, a deeper side where I finished off the week before and an 'upper' side with lighter shingle overlying old stones & clay. I went rather quickly conscious of the quick return of the tide estimating I needed not less than three hours hunting. Starting at the sand slope picking up a couple of .303 & a modern wristwatch. I broke the area up into three sections to systematically scan it, always the best way & frankly the only way.

It was really cold with rain cum snow falling making me work quicker than I might. After 10 minutes & with a couple of pistol balls and a 1907 penny, fairly deep on this side of the bed was encouraging. A big unexpected very shallow signal out popped a big deep yellow ring, I just knew this spot would produce. Its an oldie, 1874 18ct MIZPAH (you can look it up!) Plenty of useful hallmarks as per usual in old rings, very helpful.

What surprised me was the complete lack of depth for a heavy ring. I'm thinking it broke out of the old slope and rolled down to its new resting place. Plenty of other bits showed up including one blackened silver Florin of 1930. This was an interesting signal, as it was really poor with just a glimmer of light to it. Out of the hole came a really old tobacco tin completely degraded and the silver, & there's the answer. Lucky, as the tide rolled in so quickly I didn't think I'd have time to get it.

The green coins in picture are from the bottom of the dune face typically corroded from there.

Is it worth another trip? Yes, I think so. But I did have another spot to look at in-between which I might report on. And, I have to wait another several days for the tides height & times to come right.

Interesting ring, looks really chunky. I would be curious of the hallmarks if you want to show them? Glad you got some nice finds getting out there in the frigid weather.

The coin near 303 is a modern decimal 20 pence from the early 80's.  Below it is another 12 sided coin, a brass threpence fromthe forties. The anchor is a cheap lead alloy pin badge often sold on promenades for a penny in the pre war years.  All good signs!

Way to go.  I get really excited when I see exposed rocks like that.  Have a whole area I need to search but earlier found my Manticore M15 was too much for area so just bought an M8 coil.  Can't wait for next low tide.
