Hi everyone,

I am new to metal detecting and would like some advice about the purchasing options I have. These are the 2 I have:

Option#1: Gold Monster 1000 New
I would be buying it new, it is $900 before tax (so, maybe after tax around $1k). Obviously a great choice for beginners, I hear a lot of good things about this one.

Option#2: Axiom
It would be $1500 cash, but also comes with the additional DD coil & headphones. I hear also a lot of nice things about this one, as it is PI and not VLF.

What do you think would be a better bang for the buck? Thank you!

To me the Axiom is the best deal.

It depends on what you're looking for. Larger deep gold in high mineral ground, Axiom. Small shallow gold, moderate to no minerals and high trash areas, Gold Monster.

Of the two you mentioned and their prices, I would go with the Axiom for gold nuggets that are 0.1 grams and larger/deeper.

For smaller don't get skunked gold your will need a different detector. Goldmonster 1000 is an option but not for the price you quoted.

Personally, I would consider a used Minelab Equinox 800 or Nokta Legend using their 6" round DD coils in their dedicated gold prospecting programs whether running them in Multi or in 40 kHz single frequency. You will get a lot more accurate information and very usable features from those two detectors than you will from the Goldmonster 1000. Plus you can easily switch modes and hunt for other things besides gold nuggets, they have internal rechargeable batteries, wireless audio, waterproof and are more comfortable to swing and easier to collapse and pack. Gently used ones are around $500 US.

Just my opinions from owning all four detectors.

Go with the Axiom, GBPRO not even in the running.

I guess since you didn’t mention it, everyone assumes that you are detecting for gold nuggets in dry places?

If so, go with those that others suggested, but if you are looking for coins, relics, beach or river detecting in and near water, as well as gold detecting in dry places, I would consider what Jeff suggested also - something like a Equinox 800 or 900 (not the 600), or Manticore, or another multifrequency detector. It also really depends on where you are detecting; is the ground going to be salty and/or mineralized like in Nevada and parts of Arizona, or more mineralized like parts of the Sierra? The go with a PI, else do consider the others for starters. And keep in mind many people who detect for gold actually keep and use both types of machines for different types of gold in different situations.

Also read through Steve’s guides, lots of great information there!

Hi GotAU, Yes I am looking for gold! Mostly in the Sierras and Arizona as those are my primary locations of residence. Thanks so much for the link to the guides, I will definitely give them a good read & thanks to everyone else as well.
