I’m looking for a VLF machine and coil combo that can hunt in fired bricks. I’ve got a brick yard site that shuts down every machine I’ve ever used in there. I’m starting to realize that the bricks from this brick yard were used in several of the old homesteads that I frequently detect. Seen a video (Keith Southern)of the SEF handling a brick and seeing through the fired mineralized brick. Not sure if SEF does this see through on different models. Working iron and modern trash is more my thing. Mostly mild ground around this area, only a red dirt mineralized hill every now and then. Just trying to get to the next level of site work.

  • The title was changed to Best VLF In Mineralized Bricks

Some detectors certainly perform better in this type of hunting scenario than others, but I don't know of a #1 best unit if there even could be one. Too many variables.   Since most of your hunting ground is milder soil, I will suggest Ground Balancing to the bricks.  Take a large coin with you to test with.  Your mild soil will give less feedback so it should work as well as possible.     Also take some bricks home with you to experiment with. Try to estimate  how scattered the bricks could be to experiment with coil size. Your Vista X will be a good choice.  Keep your performance expectations reasonable but I promise there are good targets mixed in there.  Jethro Tull knew what he was singing about.

Black Flag,, what detectors do you use..and which of these detectors have problems working on such mineralized brick..?
The latest multi-frequency ones have the ability to detect on such materials.. but some models do it better and others less well..

I do a lot of detector tests on demanding red ceramics myself... because I know that it translates into practical detection

EL NINO77,  I use and have used a lot of different detectors. Manticore, Xterra all of the fbs, sovereigns, musketeers, Tesoro’s , f19/g2 fisher , 1236x2 ,deus, at pro. I use a lot more than these listed. I use whatever it takes to make a find. I’m a firm believer that it takes several different detectors to make the most finds.

I use VERSA in such conditions,,,as a tester I know how it works...on such materials./conditions.

For Deus 1 I would use the Gold program with Disc IAR 4..reactivity 2.5,, other programs do not have better ability ..to pass through such material..

Manticore.. I do not have... but from testing I know that you need high reactivity 7 ..so that the signal of a small coin passes well through my ceramics..

Deus 2 .. Sensitive program..,,or programs based on the sensitive program.... also work...reactivity 2.5..
the Gold program can be too reactive and unstable ..for such ceramics... , maybe I would try Relikt....if it is stable on such materials..

Coils 9-11" for depth ,,, smaller coils for separation..

Agree with JCR, ground balance out the brick. I had to do this over the weekend (ORX) in a Civil War pit dig that had chips of broken hot bricks and lots of nails masking the good relics. It was convenient to balance out the brick and just deal with the low toned nails in 2 tone.
