I think that is a cool find, I do see where you think it could be an eagle but I think its a little to far gone for me to see it. I found a similar button around an 1830 gristmill site in Connecticut it has the shank attached and is 14mm across. Looks like two piece. I didn’t try to identify it as it has a similar amount of corrosion.

Yep!!!! That’s a similar look for sure!

  2. Yes I agree with the two piece theory kac. Were you able to watch the video?

I am wondering if you see the eagle that I see... or am I just seeing what I want to see.

As it is magnetic and surrounding soil was tainted orange, I’m confident it is iron. My research says iron buttons were either much earlier, or much later. The rest of my finds on this site have been earlier, circa 1770-Civil War.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi all,

Can anyone help me identify this button I just dug? The tavern site is circa 1740 in NJ. Depth 10". Button measures 15mm in diameter. I believe I see an eagle, with its head turned to the left, two wings open, and two feet at the bottom. I can feel these details with my toothpick as well. In a short video clip you can see this better than in this picture.

Corrosion was orange dirt that didn't give me much trouble toothpicking off, but you can see she's pretty corroded. Pewter? The loop shank on the back is crushed against the back of the button. Nothing legible as far as backmark. I think it might be revolutionary period, however I also did dig a Civil War officers button here as well.

    Thank you!

    Damian

  4. Hello all! This is my first post here. I’m from eastern PA and I am on my 3rd detector and just love this hobby.

So I have some challenging buttons here, and a couple of other artifacts. It took me a while to take the pictures and get this together.

#1 and 2 I dug on two separate farm sites. #2 is small and was veeeery deep, like 10-11” deep. It has a strange shank that appears to be curled down from the top. I think it’s very old and I want to believe I might see an Eagle in there. You can just make out stars or dots around the edge of it. Badly corroded. I have no idea how to clean these up. I just used an old toothbrush and some water gently, then mineral oil to preserve.

I can’t make out the backmark on #1 but it’s gorgeous - civilian?? Age??

#3 I is not dug and I snagged from an Etsy listing I stumbled on. Backmark reads “Feine Qual”, and there is a little paint remaining in the stripes on the front shield!

4 (broken) and 5-6 are large and small flat buttons from the farm site. 4 has a backmark I can’t make out, this one has brownish rust...
