  1. It all sounds logical, both for and against headphones.  I invested over a 100 bucks in headphones though and am too cheap to invest another 200 in a amp and speakers.  Though if a Mountain lion runs up behind me I might rethink that at least for a second.

Building a deck and finding gold is a lot more fun, it took me 5 years to get over the jumps every time a pager or phone went off, i was tied to almost 24/7.

I think for all of us the detecting is more fun and maybe like fishing has a therapeutic side to it especially if we don't take it too seriously.

I live out in the country and in this area you don't see a lot of wealth.  Many here including small farmers and many others have to be a Jack of all trades to make a decent living.  There is a lot of barter of sorts going on in that if someone helps you out you find a way to do the same for them.  It's so much different than when I lived in town and you barely knew your neighbor.

I sense a bit of that same good spirit here at this website.

I thought about it all that night so I went back the next day and dug down and it was a 5 gram yellow rock. so I have decided from then on I will still dig EVERY target

I heard someone recently make that statement at our forum concerning using the discrimination on the Zed.  I don't recall who, but I wondered myself about it. No one seemed to question that statement at the time.  When I heard it said, it made me wonder if the discrimination on the Zed was somehow improved over the GP detectors but per your statement maybe not that improved?  Still for me, It would have a lot to do with the trash to treasure ratio to decide to use discrimination especially at the beach.  In the goldfields it might be different especially where there is a history of large nuggets.

Once when I was at Rye patch years ago I talked with an old timer who mentioned how he had gone through digging buckets of trash at the site of a long torn down prospectors shack with the knowledge large nuggets had been found near there.  He was eventually successful and found a very large nugget for his labor.  In those cases all the digging of trash might be worth the labor.  But at my beach I'll just go with the 3030.

Heck, I'll buy you lunch at the best A&W on the west coast when you visit.

Now A&W, that's my kinda place.  I love a frosty mug of Root beer!  A frosty mug of beer ain't bad either.

I really enjoy fishing too, so if you can work that out I'm in.  What kind of fish do you catch in the Santiam?Trout, small mouth?  Will a spinning outfit work OK there?

There are some good areas in eastern Oregon, also down in Josephine county by Grants Pass. Both areas can be HOT in the summer. Recreational mining area in Quartzville Corridor (then maybe a side trip to see White's Electronics in Sweet Home...?)

    Tom,

    Thanks,

That may just become part of my plan.  I had been thinking about a taking a tour of Whites anyway.  Just the sound of "Sweet Home" sounds inviting.  Where would you recommend a hungry miner eat while in Sweet Home?

    Wish I was retired

Appreciate it AU and Goldbrick.  Hopefully I can get a few good years of playing with my new toys before either my mind or body gives out.

    Goldbrick,

Above 5K ft sounds like a plan unless I'm along the bank of a stream or something.  I hope to get out again in the winter/spring time frame to some of the hotter climates like AZ but I know it's way to hot for me that far south this time of year for my liking.

  7. I finally got retired this past Friday evening.  Today is my first day of retirement of what would normally be a work day.  It feels really good too!

I have been planning for a while to go out west to do some semi serious prospecting.  I'm pretty well set on equipment (metal detectors) now but trying to narrow down where I will actually go.  I am set up to go to Oregon in the Sumpter area July 8-10th and to the GPAA veterens outing on the 23-24th of July in Fernly Nv (near Reno).  Right now that's the only definite things I have planned other than going to the crater of diamonds mine but will work that in when convenient.  I plan to take as long as a month or so for my trip.

I am thinking to stay in the NW area to prospect (Oregon, Nv, Washington State, maybe Northern California etc. But am open to any areas between NC and the NW as well.  I have recently re-joined the GPAA.  I would appreciate any suggestions of places I could check out to Nugget Shoot or maybe any clubs in the NW I might join to have access to some potential nugget producing areas.  I hope to hit a few Gem mines as well on my trip.

Would there be any problems with using the Zed on the beach ?

I don't have a Z but I would try it on your beach if that's all I had.  I have used a 3500 at the beach a decade ago but didn't like it as our beaches here in NC are just too trashy.  Little pieces of iron, bobby pins, fish hooks, screw tabs, pull tabs, you name it it's there. The trash to treasure ration here is just too off kilter here.  Here, you want something that will at least discriminate out iron well.  But then again I have heard some say they use the discrimination successfully with a Z in the goldfields, so yea, give it a go.  I definitely plan to use my 3030 here at the beach soon and see how that goes.

    Good luck,

Will I get it named after me if I found one?

Only if you find a really rare one but I'm sure you know that already.  But they are out there too. Millions of pieces of space debris has hit the earth.

If you want to research Meteorite hunting further check out the Nuggetshooter forum.  They have a page dedicated to Meteorites that goes back many years.  You can also use your bounty hunter to detect the metalic meteorite's. Some even attach a magnet to the end of a stick to find them.

Not sure about the electronic, but perhaps they can incorporate disc to the next Pro pointer and add a simple button to check for ferrous.

Sound like a great idea to me.  Just something that could tell if the potential target was iron or not.  Maybe a small modified magnetometer built into a pinpointer. Since a Mag can only see iron objects the red ferrous LED lights up if it's iron.

  11. Thanks Steve for re-posting.

I went through Argyle's post again since I have the Eureka Gold. I'm sure he knew what he was talking about. I thought my coil buying was over for now but I do like the coiltek coils.  I was really impressed with how well made the Wot coil appeared to be so I guess just one more won't hurt anything.

I do miss Argyle being on this Forum.

  12. I don't have Z but still a interesting thread.  Basic principles mentioned here seem to carry over into other detectors as well related to ground balance.  Maybe when the 8000z comes out I can find a good used 7000 as reduced prices? Likely by then the coils will also be reduced.

Not sure what happened though with Minelabs numbering system.  Seemed like when I bought a GP 3500 the new cost was roughly 3500 American dollars and similar with older and newer models.  But the 7000 started out at 10000 dollars?  I wonder if the original goal was for 7000 but got bumped up as it got into actual production?  Or was it just coincidence some of the other model numbers seemed to correspond with the asking price?

    Well. I am.

I kinda agree with Gambler.  Buyers in part drive the technology.  If we don't buy what they put out there it goes away eventually, if not sooner.  I have to think too that one thing driving it is the fact of diminishing gold.  Like has been said, every nugget we remove from the ground can't be replaced.  We are quickly removing the shallower gold.  So we want either deeper seeking detectors or detectors that can find the smaller gold deeper or ideally both.  The Z is the latest answer to the need.  So for now, Minelab seems to be the only company effectively filling that need with newer technology even if it be for a hefty price.

  14. Speaking of Rye patch has anyone looked at the Rye patch Claim for sale in the Classified Adds?  There are some pics of some Chevron style Gold nuggets.  I had found a few nuggets a while back at Rye Patch but never personally saw any Chevron gold.  I know there are some here here that would know how it is formed compared to more traditional nuggets but I don't.  Anyone care to explain how that happens?

    Thanks in advance,

    Terry

Does anyone here heard of finding treasures of stuffs with a magnetometer?

I don't want to give the impression though that Meteorites are not treasure as they are.  Some are possibly more valuable than gold!

I don't know if you ever watched the TV show "The Meteorite Men".  Very popular about a decade ago or less.  If you haven't I think you need to locate some of their videos.  Pretty interesting for sure.  I had communicated a dozen years ago with a Gentlemen who had one rigged up to a bicycle and he would ride across old dried up lake beds in search for Meteorites.  I don't recall the particulars of how he used it I just recall him using a bike.

They are often used to detect things like Meteorites and other objects containing Iron.  They work best at finding Ferrous objects.  Gold, silver etc is non ferrous so would not be good for chasing most objects thought to be treasure.

They are the weapon of choice for Meteorite hunters.

  17. From my nearsighted window it looks to me like Quality control has got lax at most detector companies.  In my short time hanging out here I've seen issues with Whites, Nokta/Makro and Minelab or as least those are the one's I'm most familiar with.  But in the end I ended up buying 3 Minelab machines and not regretting it, least so far.  2 of the machines were bought as they were best in their class based on a general consensus among you all.  The third machine more of a chance purchase as the price was right at the time but could have just as easily been a Whites or Nokta.  I'll take the recommended band-aids to the field with me when I go and hope I'm not having to cuss my machine when it gets down to hard use.  But in the end though the machines aren't perfect, we humans who design, use and build them aren't either.  Just the same we gota complain and hope that the companies hear us and correct the most obvious issues at least.  But at the same time, Thank you Minelab, Nokta/Makro and Whites for hanging in there!
