  1. image.thumb.jpg.58b4803e4bcb890df62d070e8885de43.jpgI would have posted this on the Canadian metal detecting forum but for some reason when I post from my iPhone it always comes back with an SQL error, and I don't have access to my laptop at the moment, so I'm here hoping there is someone who sees this and either lives near me or knows someone who does.

I’m moving and cannot take this detector with me. I’m aware that it is a collectors item and may one day be worth a lot, but it is what it is. I don't use it anymore and it just sits collecting dust. Hopefully, someone starting out can get some more mileage out of it. It doesn't look like much but it's a worthy detector, especially for coin shooting. I won't post a picture, most ppl know what the compadre looks like and I'm too tired from all the packing, anyways :). I used it for about 3 years, then got a Legend that telescopes down super small. I think there's a bunch of sand in the cam locks on the compadre because I can't get the shafts to telescope like on the Legend, which is why I can't take it with me. So, it's free.  :hd2:

I can't ship it anywhere, but if you're in the Kitchener Waterloo area and want it, dm me and I'll send you my address.

Otherwise, and it will utterly kill me to do this, on moving day, I will have to set it out with the trash 😭. So, please someone take this off my hands.

    - Keith

Edit: was able to quickly add a photo. Before Tesoro went out of business and their detectors started becoming sought after, I decided to seal the coil cover to the coil to prevent ingress of black sand to prevent falsing, etc. At the time, all I had on hand was Permatex Ultra Blue gasket maker, which is why the coil looks the way it does. On a side note, it has done its' job beautifully and the silicone has held up really well.

oh, it's the 5 3/4 sniper coil, I have ctrl box cover, hand grip cover, and garrett 1/4" headphones for it as well. It really is a good detector....

As Jeff Stated and I can only report what I know about the Simplex Plus as I have never used the Ultra or BT

Those tones on the Simplex Plus drove me nuts, they remind me of the Aflac Goose that someone has a strangle hold on and the goose refuses to die and shut up, even though I own the ATP and never use it I would much rather listen to that audio in pro mode that the ATP offers as to hear that dying goose tones of the Simplex Plus, don't know if the Ultra is the same or not but lets hope not

I’m also a simplex plus owner and wholeheartedly agree that the farty tones are very fatiguing. I'm certainly very glad that my Legend has other options, because it would have been a hard pass if it was more of that bs. I remember reading a comment/post from Sven, iirc, who, years ago when the MMK & Anfibio were newer, compared the tones to sounding like a tornado blew through a duck call factory, and remember thinking what an apt description, haha.

Yes, Nokta has a PI detector in the works, as well as a boost mode for the Legend (which I think will be an extremely low weighted SMF mode), but no official release dates have been given for either of those.

Please pardon my ignorance, Digalicious, but would you mind clarifying what you mean by "low-weighted"? I’m looking forward to boost mode whenever it gets here.....and the snow to piss off too, haha!

Same experience for me. I had my original one replaced under warranty as it was considered “super sensitive “.... just falsing off in the air all the time. The replacement Accupoint works a treat and runs fine at the default sensitivity of 7 in my soil.

I like the sound it produces via it’s own speaker, but for some reason the audio when paired to my Legend headphones sounds distorted. It maybe the headphones themselves, so I will need to find some other suitable BT ‘phones to confirm this.

Interesting....mine also falsed a bunch in the air, but I just assumed it was a little more sensitive to emi or something (even though my MI4 was operating normally) and thought I would test it a bit more. I never got the chance before Nokta emailed me back about my warranty issue (small yellow piece of plastic stuck under the screen) and asked me to send it back. I’m glad I warrantied mine since your accupoint experience makes me think mine had also been defective in the same way.

I have the Nokta headphones but haven't paired my pinpointer yet, so I’m not sure what it sounds like going through them. I'll get back to you if I notice anything similar to what you describe when I’m out next.

Definitely not my experience in the field or an air test with the MI6 connected to the D2 remote (where you can further adjust/increase its sensitivity vs. standalone) vs the Nokta (vs. the Mi6 standalone air test as clumsily demonstrated in the video (what was the MI6 standalone sensitivity setting??  FWIW The MI6 standalone default sensitivity setting is medium vs. high).

I did a test with small gold (0.8g) and the MI6 with audio via the D2 remote and also standalone vs. the Nokta and you can see the visual results below as I slowly slid the pointer down the ruler towards the target.  The tip corresponds to the height above the gold target where the pointer first sounded off and both pointers were at max sensitivity.

Nokta Accupoint detection audible at approximately the 2mm mark (target was directly below the tip at the edge of the ruler which extends a couple mm beyond the zero mm marking).

XP MI6 connected to the D2 remote audible at about the 27.5 mm mark.

    20231208_080950.thumb.jpg.de60cb0a8f38dea523c73071059e50ce.jpg

MI6 Standalone at "High" sensitivity audible at about the 22mm mark.

Both pointers are tip vs. side sensitive.

The MI6 appears to be less sensitive standalone vs. connected to the remote where you can further boost sensitivity above the MI6 standalone "high" sensitivity setting.

In my field experience the MI6 and Carrot are more sensitive in ground than the Nokta Accupoint on all types of targets (large, small, high conductivity, low conductivity, ferrous and non-ferrous).  Love the Nokta's ergnomics and the ferrous rejection mostly works on big iron (not so much on small iron) provided you are really close and get the orientation just right.  I've had it fail to recognize big iron as ferrous with the tip actually touching the ferrous target until I moved it to a specific position on the target.

It's a functional pinpointer with great ergonomics, mediocre sensitivity (in my first hand field experience), and finicky ferrous detection.  The ergonomics and ferrous detection (despite its quirks and mediocre performance) and wireless features  make it my preferred backup to the MI6 for now vs the Carrot and even the Quest Xpointer Max which has its own set of different quirks. I can see many detectorists being just fine with this as their only pinpointer.  Those who already own a more sensitive pointer might end up being disappointed.

I guess my only lingering question is whether there is high variability in sensitivity unit-to-unit with the Accupoint based on the myriad of perspectives here and elsewhere on Accupoint sensitivity.

    FWIW

"I guess my only lingering question is whether there is high variability in sensitivity unit-to-unit with the Accupoint based on the myriad of perspectives here and elsewhere on Accupoint sensitivity."

I think this may be the case. I had to warranty the accupoint that came with my pro pack and, although I never checked with a ruler, I noticed the replacement seemed to be less sensitive than the original one, which isn't a bad thing honestly, as level 6 on the first one was too sensitive, so I settled on level 5.

From the videos I've watched, the MI-4 does have a good sound to it. I really dislike the sound from my Pro Find 35.

The 35 has a ratcheting tone, similar to the Carrot, I think? Yeah, I’m not a fan of that either, mainly because the ratcheting tone doesn't give as much info as the pitch does. The pitch gets louder, faster and the actual tone pitch rises when you are closer to the object, giving you a better idea of where to start your hole. Whereas with the ratcheting tone, the closer you get to your target, the faster and louder the ratcheting, only. You don't get the extra info from the rising pitch tone sound, and for me, that's makes all the difference in the world for faster target recovery.

  7. Nothing I have found works better than my MI-4. I have previously owned the Garrett carrot, the pulse dive and recently got the legend pro package with the Accupoint, and although the Accupoint works better than the carrot and the pulse dive, I prefer the ergonomics and button placement of the MI-4. it just feels so good in my hand and my thumb naturally rests right where the button is. Plus, the pitch sound works better than anything I've ever used to quickly locate a target. My only complaint is it's a little too quiet for my old fart ears, but aside from that, I absolutely love it and at some point here, I plan on selling my Accupoint to get another MI-4 so that my best friend who is just starting out learning to detect has a solid, reliable pinpointer.

Welcome, MLB.  You've already generated a lot of good discussion with your Legend coil post, so thanks for contributing.

I appreciate your kind words, Chase. It is a genuine pleasure to be here and learning from everyone and contributing in a small way. Looking forward to many good conversations with everyone here.

  9. Thank you everyone for all of your replies and helping me figure out the best coil for my legend. I have much respect for everyone here, and as I said in the meet and greet forum, I appreciate so much the information and experience you all share here and I have learned and I am still learning so much from everybody!

Take care of everyone and happy hunting and see you on the next post!

Detech coils are excellent on my MXT and I think they are an improvement over the available stock coils. This is common on older detectors but not nearly as much on detectors introduced in the last few years. OEM coils from Nokta Makro (and Garrett) are available in a wide range of sizes & perform extremely well. They saw the need/demand for a full range of coils and filled it for their units, and the quality & performance is first rate. I do not think a 6X8 SEF would hold any advantage over the Nokta LG24 or an Ultimate 13 over the LG35. I encourage you to get both.

Ah ok, so what I hear you saying is that in the past manufacturers have made lacklustre OEM coils but that coils on the new detectors, at least for Nokta, are far superior. That's actually good to know and will save me a pretty penny as Detech coils are actually quite expensive here in Canada. I will definitely be getting the LG 24 as soon as spring comes around, I am done with Picasso'ing it up with the LG15, lol.

The LG15 6" round DD coil, is an amazing little sniper coil, but like yourself, I found it to be a little small for my needs. Kind of like painting a wall with a brush, instead of a roller. The LG24 is my go to coil for most of my sites (Oh oh, I just got notified that Jeff replied lol). Most Legend owners who use the LG24, don't take it off much, unless they need large amounts of coverage.

For reasons Chase stated, I doubt there will be third party coils for the Legend.

Somehow my reply got cut off so I’m going to try to re-do it from memory. I want to say it's like painting with a Q-tip, haha! It's indeed very small, but I can tell it will be a killer in heavy trash so I’m ok with that, but as a general use coil, I definitely need something a little larger. After resting everyone's replies, I think I’m going to have to resign myself to only the stock coils, but from what you all are saying, they are very good and AM coils are not even a necessity at this point.

Having used several Detech 8X6 coils in the past, all I can say is that they have been excellent coils but a bit heavy for their size.

I own a Legend and the L30, LG28, LG24, and LG15 coils. The LG30 and LG24 coils are very lightweight for their size, have excellent target separation, and have depth that is at least equal to their projected capability on 15 to 25 mm coins in normal soil conditions which are around 10.5 inches for the LG30 and 7.5 or so inches for the LG24.

The best depth I got on similar sized coins using an 8x6 Detech SEF coil was 7”.

That's really good to hear that the stock coils are performing well, maybe even just as well as a Detech/Coiltek would. I’m actually surprised that your experience with the Detech coil wasn't deeper, but I have never used an aftermarket coil myself and am solely relying on anecdotal experiences from others such as yourself, as well as YouTubers, etc., so I don't really know what to expect. But that's good to hear that the stock coils are on the money. Would you say that the LG24 is worth the extra $200, or do you think I should just wait to see if NEL or Detech come out with something better?

The coverage is actually less for the butterfly coil dimensions you provided (8" swing coverage vs. 9.5" swing coverage for the LG24).  Can't speak to depth, but the LG coils seem to perform pretty well in general  Of all the latest Simultaneous Multi-frequency detectors on the market right now (Legend, Equinox, Manticore, Deus 2, Quest V series and Apex), I have only seen third party coils for Equinox, so far (from Coiltek).  I am thinking the multifrequency presents a challenge for 3rd coil manufacturers unless there is close collaboration between the detector manufacturer and the third party coil manufacturers, so if you are looking third party coils for Legend and these other SMF detectors may be in for a long wait.

You are very correct that the SEF 8x6 would have slightly less coverage, and I’m not sure why that didn't occur to me. And, yes, I would have to agree with you regarding the challenge that MF likely presents to aftermarket coil manufacturers. I do recall seeing a post where others had shared that they had either spoken with Dilek or seen her state somewhere that Nokta would be willing to work closely with an aftermarket manufacturer to see other coils come to market but haven't heard of anything since. I believe this was back in late 2022 if my aging memory serves me correctly. The world has changed a lot in the last few years and I’m wondering if maybe that shift is translating to less options, not just for, but especially, the detecting world?

  14. Hi Digalicious,

I think the biggest advantage for me would be the shape of the coil, as it gives greater coverage and depth over the LG24, while at the same time being pretty small. I can't see myself ever using the LG30 that came with my machine, and my first time (actually only time before the ground froze solid) out with the Legend I felt that the LG15 was too small. I think a butterfly coil would be the best of both worlds in regards to depth, separation, coverage and EMI but also don't have the firsthand experience to know for sure. Do you have any experience with using any of the SEFs at all? From the limited info I've come across, almost everyone finds them a pleasure to use and a significant upgrade over the stock coils, and if there's something out there that makes the Legend even better, count me in! I haven't picked up the LG24 yet, and honestly would prefer to buy a Detech coil for my medium "in-betweener" instead of another stock.

  15. I've searched this forum and many others high and low looking for any info I can find about aftermarket coils for the Legend and, although I found a few posts here and there where others have expressed interest, I haven't found anything concrete. My dream coil for the Legend would be an 8x6 SEF Butterfly like Detech made for some of the older machines, as many of you have stated they are far superior in every way to the stock coils. I have even emailed both Detech and Dilek to see if they would spill the beans, but so far everyone is tight/lipped surrounding this. Not sure if that's because they are in the works, or if there aren't any plans on making aftermarket coils for the Legend afterall, which, if that were to be the case, I would find very puzzling, especially since an 8x6 SEF Butterfly was made for the Garrett ACE series and many other lower-end machines.

What are the chances we will see some aftermarket coils made for the Legend? And most importantly (at least to me), an 8x6 SEF Butterfly? It will be so disappointing if the Legend is overlooked in this manner, so I’m not going to give up holding out hope.

  16. Hi all,

I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi, especially after many years of reading comments and learning from all of the seasoned old timers here, I thought I'd make my own account and start interacting a bit more! I have learned a great deal from many of you, including Jeff McClendon, Phrunt, Cal Cobra, JCR, Chase Goldman, Steve Herschback, Sven1, Cipher, D. Smith, Bill S. CA, Digalicious, and many many more! All of your expertise has been invaluable to me and I’m extremely grateful for this forum and the contributors. I also wanted to mention oldkoot, but I can't seem to find him as a member here, so I must've seen him on treasurenet or somewhere else. Anyways, it's a real honor to be here and learning from everyone's experience.

I recently picked up the Legend Pro pack as I've been rocking an original Simplex (Phrunt, I know you hate yours, haha) for far too long and absolutely LOVE IT! I primarily hunt in parks, which the Legend kills in, and find it to be very stable and an overall pleasure to use. I won't be hunting anymore this year, as the ground is going to be frozen here in southern Ontario for the next several months, sadly, but I’m excited as all hell to start hunting in spring when the ground thaws. Again, it's great to be here and a great big thank you to Steve H for creating this awesome place!
