  1. Yeah I totally missed the fact that I was sweeping across the coil lengthwise!  But really I’m impressed as normally the depth will be the width of the coil - like 4-5”.  Actual depth typically can be better than air tests and will obviously be better for larger targets. So I’d say it is about perfect.  The majority of targets are in its range and hopefully it will miss some of the pop cans, foil, and tent stakes.

  2. Here is another video of my Manticore at Newport Beach near Santa Ana River at an area with heavy black sand. I made an earlier video but didn’t specify what modes I tried. This one I do. However the default Iron settings are in effect - I didn’t try All Metal.
Also interesting is this guy’s video that’s pretty close to where I was - he’s showing higher than normal radioactivity there!

Here’s a short video showing the ferrous content:

  3. Great news!

I had the coil wired bassackwards plus a shield was not being grounded.

I rewired it and man it runs perfectly in my front yard at least.  My front yard usually has a lot of EMI - but this detector is running dead quiet.  No jitter, no pulsating, nothing.  Not sensitive to shock at all. Can't tell its on unless you advance the threshold.  It was detecting who knows what in my front grass.  It remains to be seen how it does at the beach.  I won't be able to get out there for a couple weeks.

  4. As I’ve said on some other thread, it seems one of the AQ three coil connector pins is unconnected (it’s very loose). I know which is P and which is N. I can’t get my connector’s housing off to see without the likelihood of breaking the base connector. It just won’t undo.  I discovered that my Beach Hog has shield connections that I probably missed on my gpx to AQ adapter.

  5. Unfortunately it doesn’t work well. It has very good depth under the coil but is sensitive to changes in altitude over the sand. It sounds off with any abrupt coil movements. ATS and delay setting help quiet it down otherwise.  Just not practical due to the AQ design. It worked great on the Gp Extreme.  Next I’ll try it on a surf pi pro.

i took some more videos of black sand behavior of the Manticore as well as compared the AQ. Thought the AQ was going to work great until I walked with it.  Gold mode on the Manticore cut through the black sand pretty well.

i didn’t modify the AQ headset because I went back to my test site and this time could hear the whimper on the nickel at 16”. I had also been thinking of buying a Tony Eisenhower set but I think I’ll wait til I have an opportunity to try it first.  I don’t find a fault with the AQ headset and think I will likely move to a wired or wireless earbud system.

  6. If you are going to replace caps, test them after you remove them one at a time with a good meter that doesn’t just give you value but ESR and other parameters.  So many products have been damaged by people doing cap replacements without reason. The instructions for the XLT rechargeable pack say it is 10V not 12V. So either you are putting the cap in backwards or your pack voltage is too high. The CD4316 has a max VC spec of 10V so maybe you damaged several components with your “12V” pack.
