On MD-Blog it shows a shadow of a detector that looks like the Nokta fors gold. It's being called Nokta fors relic for 2016.

The Nokta and Makro detectors  are coming out of nowhere. You just say what you need and they will make it for you. That detector don't come out as a after thought but as a top notch machine.

Nokta as I get older I need one with a digging arm.Haha

    The Best Nokta

    Chuck

Yeah, and one that cooks well also.

The Minelab coils and TDI coils are not the same. The TDI is very forgiving and can run most Minelab compatible coils. The Minelabs however are more demanding and will not run coils made specifically for the TDI.

Some larger Minelab coils overload when run on the TDI at lower pulse delay settings. I tried quite a few briefly and found that the pulse delay had to be run from 10 uS up to 17 uS or more to just get the coils to work at all in the air. No telling what exposing them to bad ground would do.

In my opinion the coils that are going to works best on the TDI are those made specifically for it. I have no real evidence to back that up however, just a feeling based on the fact that the Minelab coils are "out of spec" as far as the TDI is concerned. In general it does appear from the evidence that the larger the Minelab coil is the less likely it is to run properly on the TDI.

It appears the reasonable argument is weighted in favour of coils that a made for specific brands of detectors.

I'd just love to pay $170 Oz dollars (used) for a 14" NF, but the RazorBack will end up being the one I buy, even though it's nearly $300 Oz money (new).  And of course it is a Blue Moon if you see a used RB available used.  There's a message in that.  At least I would think so.

    Thanks for this one, Steve.

  3. Tortuga, I tried electrical tape at first to increase the diameter a bit and it was too thick to get the shaft back in. I tried duct taping it on the outside but that only works for about half a day.

I'll be back out in the field again soon, will let you know if I run across anything that works, let me know if you find something too.

On another 7000 note, I break 2 or 3 nylon bolts a year on my GPX. I keep a little bag of them in my pack. Does anyone know if they sell replacement uh...thingmajigs...to hold the 7000 coil to the lower shaft? I wouldn't mind having at least one in my pack just in case because that would suck to have to wait however many weeks or months to get one shipped while out in the field.

Just get some good enamel paint and paint it on.  Do one coat let it dry and try for a fit.  Maybe another coat if it isn't snug enough.

  4. Steve I agree with you entirely, but what about something like what Wes is talking about?

This may seem picky (but it's not).

On a mulit-thousand dollar piece of equipment

supposedly built for rugged use in remote areas,

why in the world should the customer have to be "gentle"

when extending a shaft from the collapsed travel position?

Shouldn't these detectors be rugged enough to withstand thousands of times extending that shaft?

If we do not demand equipment that works

we are going to get caught out in the middle of nowhere

with some plastic piece that breaks if it is not used gently.

A badly designed part is something a customer should not have to accept

    on a multi-thousand dollar product.

Minelab should jump all over issues like this.

They should acknowledge problems and correct them immediately.

The customer confidence that would build is incalculable.

    Instead, we have silence.

Yep, silence.  I emailed ML with a bit of info from a member of staff in Adelaide and they only said how they upheld the highest standards.  I just said about SHs comment on the Z, that I might consider getting one if they do an up-grade on it.  But here's another example of cheap crap when it comes to the build of the machine.

    I really don't get it!

  5. I mentioned in another place that I'd spoken to Reidman and he said that he can't post anything with batteries into Oz. OK....

So, I PMd him from here.  He asked me to email him with another email.  Did that last night or this morning (can't remember off-hand, I had one too many brandies last night).  So am awaiting a response from him.

Will let you know as soon as a reply lands.

  6. Created a pack for the SL I can run 4 18650 3400 mah cells for 14.8 to 16.8 volts has full balance and protection circuit.

I also have a 6 cell 4000 mah pack 12.6 volt. You can get them on Ebay. Also have 6800 mah TDI & Pro batteries. And 5 cell TDI 18.5 volt 3400 mah packs.

Hi Reidman, a lot of us here in Oz want to score one of those packs for the SL.  Can you assist us in making a connection with the seller and organize something for us.  If not I'll give them a call myself.

  7. Only this morning I read one of Steve's articles when he was at Moore Ck. and how he adjusted a machine to suit a different patch of ground on tailing heaps.

Delete the slagging you copped from the chatterati.  They've got little else with which to amuse themselves.  Besides if they were any good at all at this business they'd be out on their boat with a beautiful woman drinking expensive champagne that they bought with all the gold they found with the TDI that hadn't been adjusted.

    LOL!!!

    Hi Sunriseboy,

Yes, there is a guy in OZ that does mods.  His name is Luke Lindsay.  He can add a mod that reduces the warble making the detector much quieter.  To know more about what his mods do, you can look at his you tube videos he lists under lukeozdigger.

Unfortunately, he is in the process of moving right now, so catching him at a time when he can do the mods may take a while.

Luke posts on many PI forums including a couple in OZ.  Usually you can catch him on the TDI and goldmaster forum.  Just google the forum and you should get a link.

    Reg

Thanks for the heads-up, Reg.  I've been in touch with him and am working on the situation.

  9. Hullo everyone.  I'm mulling over getting a TDI Pro Oz unit here in Oz.

It's a 2010 model.  Is there someone here in Oz that does an 'upgrade' should it need it.  I assume because it is five years old it might need some kind of tweek.  A bit like most of us oldies.

  10. My experience with the crappy design and 'cheap' parts in the guts of the Garrett Pro Pointer created major heart-burn for this guy.  So much so that it got chucked in the trash in a fit of anger, when I found the wires were shorting on the mother-board causing it to 'false' constantly and then after spending some time on re-designing the internals; it came to pass that the rubber grommet on the switch had been installed incorrectly and ("it sure wasn't waterproof...let me tell ya!") the switch mechanism collapsed inside.  Unbelievable.  What left a bitter taste in my mouth was the fact that as it was purchase in the US, it was unable to be repaired here in OZ.

The milk and water response from Garrett, was, in my opinion, pathetic.

  11. Steve, how very kind of you to go to the length of doing this considerable reply.

You are very discerning and a great communicator.  A brilliant combination.  I can see I'm an MXT kind of guy.  I know underpants are a number of various colours but I'm not going to spend the rest of my life finding out why.  Accordingly, with the V3i, I ain't no gadget kind of guy that buys something and then strips it down and spends a month figuring out how it works.

Yep, I like the point-and-press kind of machine.  Way to go.

Anyway Steve, thanks again.  I really appreciate your integrity and straight-bat (an aussie-ism referring to cricket) approach to telling us what's what and how it's going to be.

But my problem now is that my email-chat-mate Ron Kruz, has told me he just went and bought a Techics T2 SE/Ltd.  So that's really chucked a cat in amongst the pigeons.  So, as Ronnie said, '...more homework for you to do, Robin'. So where do I look at T2 performance?

     Aaaargh!

                   Best regards....Robin

  12. I see Dilek from Nokta was replying to the various comments on the Nokta Gold.

How fantastically refreshing seeing a manufacturer actually engaging the users of their products.  When this gets into the general community Minelab and Garrett are going to lose a lot of sales.  I for one had a lot of heart-burn with my Garrett AT Pro; and the response from Garrett was less than impressive.  Hence I'm lining up my financial duckies to buy a Nokta Gold in the near future.

May I suggest, in connection with the chest mounted discussion that it simply go to "wireless" (that would be great for the headphones also).  Or will that not be possible due to various electronic configuration set ups?  Bear in mind I know practically zero about electronics. But it was just a thought.

And well done Dilek and Steve to provide a great introduction and commentary of the Gold model, and what's happening in terms of design processes and new products.  Thank you.

  13. No offense taken for being mistaken for an Aussie, although my limited sense of humor and  ability to spew out barrels of  colorful language immediately disqualifies me.  I did work for an Australian company at the Lihir, Papua, New Guinea, gold mine and made several  trips to Brisbane and really enjoyed the place.

Glad things seem to be working out with your AT Pro and hope it stays that way.

Yep, EZ, Aussies are funny buggers.

We certainly have a heightened skill to produce salty language and possess a unique skill in describing people's intelligence, relationships with certain animals, and colourful descriptions of sexual activities and bodily functions.  They are also experts in providing glittering descriptions and advice on just how one should go about managing those activities and functions.

  14. I have the most regrettable effects on anything computerized.

Yes, Steve, I did change down to the 5x8 coil and it worked well.  Now here's the thing; the confounded 8x11 coil is now working OK also.  OMG...go figure.

So I guess I have to dig in to eat a very large serving of humble pie after give the people at Garrett a fair spray about the matter.

Anyway, boys, I can't tell you how grateful I am that you are so ready to give people some great advice and direction. I really appreciate it.

And Az...please take it easy on that knee of yours.  It sounds like you've been in more trouble than Jesse James!

  15. I am set to go swing the FORS Gold this Saturday. Been a long time coming after so many obstacles from knee surgery, shoulder replacement surgery, and the passing of my father.  The plan is to hit an old mining camp and hit the trashy areas and some areas Barry “Clay Diggins” has told me about. This will be the first outing with the FORS before heading up to Rich Hill sometime next month. I did go out to a local park and play with the FORS Gold to get familiarize to the controls. You can bet I will be wearing knee pads as I cannot risk shearing off the knee cap again as I did on the replaced knee back in April while out prospecting.

    FORS1.jpg

Brother, I am really looking forward to hearing how it performs.  Everything I'm doing now is working towards full-time prospecting and with that Nokta you have.
