  1. Sunriseboy, I'm surprised you're having those issues (unless you're in a very, very mineralized area) I took an ATP out to the beach yesterday and it performed flawlessly. Dry sand, wet sand and in the water too.

Well, I'm very happy for you. That wasn't my experience.

However, I've done 'another' factory reset and am off to the beach this morning to give it another trot.

    So time will tell.

  2. Never having either detected in Australia with or without a Garrett AT Pro I'm just clutching at straws but I'm wondering about the legendary ground mineralization you have.  Is it possible that any VLF detector would act the same at your location?  Before sending it all the way back to Garrett, could you try a friends AT Pro or another VLF detector to see how they work  at the same location?

Hi Bob, I thought you were here in Oz. Hence I posted the link to the store in Bendigo.  Sorry about that.

My problems happened at the beach. But the same thing is occurring away from the beach also.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  3. Having just taken delivery of a brand new Garrett AT Pro, I wish to high heaven I waited until I had the cash to pay for a Nokta.

After having spent literally months studying and researching which detector I should get, after getting it and taking it to the beach on Saturday, I'm stunned at the fact it is now falsing so badly you can move it any way you like and it gives low, medium and/or high tones.

Did all the factory resets when it was switched on and when it was switched off...to no avail.

Being on a pension, every dollar is valuable and I've scrounged, scrimped and saved for a new detector for so long now, and this is what Garrett come up with. Unbelievable. And as it came from the US  (I live in Oz), it looks as though I have to go through all the pain and grief of sending it back to the US if I'm to get any satisfaction on having it repaired.

However, one thing of which is certain; when it's fixed, it's 'outski' and onto the market and I'll get a new Nokta. Thanks for nothing Garrett.

But thanks for a great review, Steve, you've sold me on the Nokta.

  4. Hi EZ Bob, go here:- http://www.aussiedetectors.com/apps/webstore/products/show/4702898- and talk to Brad, he's got them in his shop in Bendigo.

Oops! I forgot to add, when you bring an item in from overseas over 1K; you pay tax/duty plus GST. So be aware of that fact.

And should you want to buy Garrett products to save; get a Bongo address and bring it in that way. As Garrett have a caveat on there products in the US that dealers are not permitted to ship internationally.

Thanks Steve and Ray and everyone who commented on the Nokta FORS Gold.  I can think of a completely unlimited number of reasons why I should buy one today, but before I let loose of the money  I'll play the devil's advocate and ask myself why I shouldn't buy one.  No particular order or priority.

    1.  It's likely that 30 days after I get my detector, Nokta will come out with a new and improved version, incorporating the suggestions in this thread and other improvements.

    2.  It looks like KellyCo is the only place in the US to get one and I just don't like buying things from a sole source vendor. KellyCo seems to be a reputable company and they've been around longer than I can remember.  But I believe in some level of competition and I have a knee jerk reaction against buying something when I have no choice where to get it from.

    3.  I'm a little bit suspicious of a high performance detector that's only powered by 4 AA cells. Granted, the Pro version comes with NiMH AA batteries but still...it seems to me that detector performance is to some extent dependent on the power of the power supply.  That may be more true of PI detectors though.

    4.  I was gearing up to order a Minelab SDC-2030 and the FORS Gold has got me wavering.  Of course, the only real solution is to get both of them.

    5. As a courtesy, I'll have to explain to my wife why we need another detector.  This is a slam dunk because I made some extra money this month and a new detector purchase won't come out of household money or deplete any reserves.   Well, the SDC-2030 will.

I'd sure appreciate any thoughts anyone may have.

    Thanks,

    Bob
