I hope they don't add weight to the coil design just to appease the water hunters. That would leave all us non water hunters swinging a heavier coil. It's so easy to add a weight to the coil if you want it to sink. Filling the rod with sand would help as well.
I guess they would not do such a silly thing😉
The 8" coil is coming with a removable coil cover (65gr). That could be used as a ballast in the water if the coil happens to float.
Without coil cover, it is very light since it is made with glass bubble-filled epoxy as is the 12.5" coil model.
We strongly feel that a coil cover is optional as the back of the coil is made of very hard epoxy.
Le Jag has never used a coil cover for many years without any visible wearing.
Ask Joe, he has field tested the proto.

Just ballast it

I too am looking forward to availability of an 8 inch coil.
Hope you heal well and can resist over-doing it too soon.
It is coming, the field tests of the proto are finished and it has been validated

Russ is not in Marketing per se, he is responsible for Social Media - an area they badly need him for and where he will do them a lot of good.
Russ works remotely, he is not in El Paso and may not have been there yet - since he came back to FTP
FTP has notoriously poor internal communications
A number of the details he related about the AQ are unlikely to be correct. Here is my view based on what I have heard along the way. I am not infallible on this.
Hardwired coil. No. Various size coils - yes
Wireless headphones - unlikely
14” coil extremely unlikely
Gulf salinity issues fixed with some kind of modification - no - it was fixed by more carefully securing the coil cable to the shaft.
100% discrimination between iron and gold - NO
20’ depth for diving - maybe
Price >$2k - almost certainly
8 - 10 hours on a battery - likely
Replaceable Lion batts - yes
Date - if you want to lose money, bet on any detector being available on a pre-announced date!!
Wireless : Could be but independently from the Impulse system, i.e. using an external BT transponder. NO BT inside the enclosure.
14" coil NO, 8" coil option YES
Salinity problems? Reported problems had nothing to do with salinity. The salinity of any large Ocean water remains within very narrow limits. There is nothing special about the waters in Mexican Gulf, Florida, California or Hawaii. The enclosed seas are usually much more saline than open ocean 'e.g. Mediterranean, red sea, dead sea or some specific salted lakes.
Demo have been made that the Impulse is insensitive to highly saline water.
20' depth NO, this is NOT a diver unit; Most probably 10' as the close competition depending on further testing
8-10h battery : maybe, depending on further testing with various types of battery cells

Then maybe "The Team" needs to get on the same page. Especially if you are questioning it. Having integrity, transparency and being honest in a product goes along ways with many people. Anyways guys...I thought many of you already would have been a subscriber and seen this. I highly recommend it and they have some awesome giveaways ! It is called Treasure Talk. Its Phil Myers and Jeff's show. The episode in question is from Sept 28th. See for yourself. Enjoy !

14” coil? Wireless? Makes no sense. The existing coil if anything is too large, and wireless has already been stated as interfering with the electronics. Though I suppose a fix could be found for that.
Agreed!!!

I watched a podcast recently of FT with Russ Balbirona the digital marketing specialist. It was a great show , lots of info. A little recap of what he mentioned : they are looking at a release date sometime of April 2021. This is for the NON limited. Not what all these testers are using. Stock coil of 14". Battery life they are shooting for 8-10 hours. Wireless capabilities. MSRP over $2000 , but under $3500. This came from Russ. I thought he was great. I am looking forward to what the final product will be like.
❓❓❓❓❓❓
Could you give us the link to that podcast?
Thanks

I always thought the prototype he uses was called the Aqua Manta. The Limited is made by FT and has the control box mounted on the handle. Was the Aqua Manta made by FT?
Alexandre was hired by FTP based on his N'th operational prototype version then named AQUAMANTA.
FTP has renamed it Impulse AQ for marketing reasons but it is exactly the same as the AQUAMANTA.
FTP has prepared the industrialization under close control of Alexandre.
The Impulse AQ LTD is now in normal production at El Paso and Alexandre is now working on the prototype of the Impulse GOLD version.
Le Jag (Denis) has always been the preferred tester of Alexandre for all his consecutive prototype versions.
As such, he owns the latest prototype version and uses it routinely on his Brittany beaches with the success that is seen from his postings. This success is due to several factors:
- His years long experience in using any type of PI
- His very good knowledge of the dynamics of his preferred beaches and the high tides.
- The very good performance of the AQ
- His experience in using ALL-METAL mode at all time and still hear the differences between a hair pin or iron nail and a gold ring.
- The fact that people here are not wearing 10k or 14K but 18K jewelry.
- A very good health and powerful muscles to manipulate that large scoop he is using to dig such deep holes.

Learned some pinpointing tricks from this video. Tried to use auto translate but I got some very weird translations 😄 Would love to have the part translated where the lead is discriminated out but not the gold and aluminum. I'm getting a better understanding of where to hunt on my particular list of beaches. Thanks for the video Alexandre.
First passes were in all metal mode.
Then, in tone mode and, finally in mute modeThe iron nail is fully discriminated but the lead bullet gives a lower tone than the gold or aluminium.
The pull tab can not be discriminated out.

You have the ability to edit what you have written by using the options function in the upper right corner of your post.
I had not seen this new option.
The edit button was before at the bottom of the post.

Pretty amazing that they went out of their way to create a manual for a detector that will be less than 100 units and soon be out of production.
You would have preferred that there was NO manual?😉
This manual will be modified later but the mods will only be slight updates about the battery aspects. Nothing dramatic!!

The site http://fisher-impulse.com is going to become annoying every time I visit it in hope of some update or information or something about AQ and you see the ''COMING SOON'' sign. Please put at least a picture of the AQ in there!!!
Have a look at it now.
Still unfinished but, at least it is there.
This is a first draft from Alexandre to be completed and kept up-to-date later on by the official marketing support of FTP.

Isn't this what happens every time a brand new detector hits the market? We've certainly seen some of that even here, and detectorprospector.com is pretty tame compared to many modern communication channels (that term sounds too tame, but I'm sure you get the picture 😉).
We try to compensate for the lack of official marketing communication channel.

Nokta comes close to providing such access and tapping into the pulse of their user base. The designer of the Tarsacci MDT 8000 is also similarly approachable. It's also not often that users are willing to pay for the privilege of essentially beta testing a detector. So it is kind of expected the designers would take such a vested interest in the feedback, good or bad. Looks like it has been a pretty successful experiment in product development that should spur other manufacturers to sit up and take notice.
For us, it is the least we should do to users who have paid to be guinea pigs.

Agree 100%. It's not often, well actually NEVER 😉that you get that much involvement in a new product. On the flip side it must be a roller coaster for them to read comments that may go from "I absolutely love this machine" to "Your machine is a piece of junk" I feel for them, and trying to please everyone is never going to happen. It will be interesting to see how the next generation of the Impulse ends up.
Simple, we just make the average of all the comments on THIS forum and if it is over 0, we are quite happy.😉😢
For the OTHER forum(s), we just ignore them.

This could happen to you!!
Long slow romantic walk on the beach this morning. Almost 3 hours in it's time to change the battery. I take the battery off the detector to make the swap and look at it and holy cow the thing is bulbous!
I suspect this is what happens when you don't practice safe charging.
I was just thinking about the recent threads on the beautiful batteries OBN is making and thinking I don't need to get one, I've got two perfectly good batteries. I'm going to rethink that. HELP OBN!
Tim
This is indeed not normal.
This could come from the battery cells inside the pack BUT it could also be a problem in the battery charger.
When you get in contact with FTP support, you should probably return both of them to be verified.

Almost enough to scare me away from the AQ until I saw you were mostly in the dry. Interesting though the bottle caps, from my quick count, about 1/3 of the caps were Corona's.......the average for Corona would be very similar down here in Florida at my beaches.
Good luck on your next hunt.
Cliff
QuoteI have a lot to learn, so I am digging every target. I am getting better at knowing hair pins, as I could call most of them before I dug them. Bottle caps are a different story, as the only idea they might be bottle caps was the extremely strong and wider signal.
This was the exact report. He not only went on dry sand but also was digging every target while learning the sounds.

As Alexandre said in the previous post, the salt water issue reported by Deb is currently under close scrutiny. We still do not know whether it is a problem of shielding discontinuity on that specific coil or a more general problem (specific to Florida?😢).
A smaller coil will probably better react under the sea water than a larger coil but it will also cover less surface per swing. It will also be more sensitive to smaller targets but less to larger targets. This is a general rule(well-known cake sentence!!).
'Cable Connector' is the COIL connector to the enclosure. This is indeed very specific to the coils designed for the AQ. No question about replacing these coils with other types, they would not work at all under the stringent conditions defined by the short pulse delays of the AQ. There is no problem related to the headphone connector.
Yes, the Li-Ion protected battery cells (18650) will be inserted inside the upper shaft and replaceable by the users. The autonomy will depend on the modes of operation and on the TRUE mAh of the 18650 cells.
Just to clarify this point once for all:
The only problem with the AQ of Deb was that the coil cable was not fixed tightly enough to the lower shaft; it was moving in the water and thus, generated the false signals.
Tightly fixing the cable on the lower shaft is a general requirement for all sensitive detectors.
Nothing to do with the Florida waters,.The 12" coil works perfectly in salted water. provided the pulse delay is slightly increased.

Turned on the machine, all metal, sensitivity maxed out, held the coil up horizontal at chest height, and all it did was squawk.
If the chatting is already in those conditions in your backyard, one could suspect local EMI troubles.
Try changing the pulse frequency on several positions at startup of the system and use the position generating the less noise.. -

Extracted and translated from there:
What to plan for before buying the future Impulse AQ from Fisher:
- an appointment with his banker.(In the process a small gift for Madam, to pass the pill)
- a subscription to the gym, because if you are not used to digging holes of 40 cm or more, it will be useful. (Not to mention the filling, just as physical sometimes)
- to be done in good conditions, a suitable digging tool, sifting shovel, sand scoop, call it what you want, it must be part of the adventure. (Stain Steel preferred)
- be well shod, the afternoons will be long, hard to stop when it bites.
- an XXL garbage bag, because there will be some (PI obliges), and it would not be correct to leave them there, but you already know that, don't you.
- perhaps the most important, patience, hours of observation in search of a good spot, to come and go on the sand, but not only, between the rocks, under the pebbles. .. Yes, it won't be looking for you, it will find it, but only if you are in the right place.
- a good front light, a car charger, something to warm up, and room in the trunk for you and your detection buddies.
And yes, all of this is to add to your wildest golden dreams, good night everyone.

UPDATE: Spent this morning working with Jim Pugh here in Pensacola. He had a chance to use my machine and I used his. I was able to used his with no problem. We tried something on my machine that he had already done to his. We routed the coil wire (leaving a little for coil movement) in a straight line, and tightly wrapped with velcro, along the top of the shaft, for about 15 inches. The remaining coil wire was wrapped around the upper part of the shaft as usual. This seemed to solve the problem when sweeping the coil in the water. I was able to sweep the coil in the all metal mode without all the extra noise. I don't know if maybe I was getting movement in the coil wire when sweeping the coil or what, but it seems to be working a lot better now.
Thanks Jim I really appreciate all your help.
Special thanks to JIim.🎺🎺
We were lost in space to guess what that could be 😢
