Checking in to see your progress...

Thanks, I've not gotten far, been busy at work and lazy when I get home.  Just took the knobs off and the o-rings look pretty good. I'll lube them up..

They all look like the one in the picture.

Do you think I should replace them anyways?

I just ordered the coil and headphone cable, they should be here on friday.

Might be a good Idea to make this the "How to repair a Excalibur" Post on Steve's forum. So I can refer all who ask in the future, since I no longer do this, other then my own machines. I will be adding to it for sometime.

    Coil Cable and repair

Cable is from McMaster Carr.. #9204K12    4 lead.. 20/4..continuous flex.. .25 dia.

This may be a stupid question but is it possible to just cut the wires half way up, slip on a shrink tube, splice the wires back and slide the shrink tube up the wire instead of replacing the whole cable?

I'd like to do as little as possible to get it ready for the water, but I'm worried that I may overlook something like a seal that causes the machine to flood.

Edit: I just found your top o-ring inspection video. Going to do that now!

Not to be negative...........I would say it needs a complete over haul.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

    What is your skill level?

Intermediate.  I have some experience soldering, I'm comfortable opening the machine up and putting it back together.

If you send it into the service center your looking at 650.oo plus to fix.

Do you think its necessary? I'm just looking to get the wires covered back up and get in the water.

    Fixing it yourself,

    yes please!

........ if you have never had one apart, will be a challenge. Me setting here thinking about

I was able to make a pair of headphones for my equinox by following your videos. Thank you for posting them.

making you a parts list is over whelming. 😬  The reason I say that is because it is a water machine

What parts off the top of your head?

And   "All"   has to be perfect for its longevity. So what kind of hunting do you have planned?

I plan to be hunting in swfl and Miami with this machine. Mostly gulf coast though. Wading neck deep.

  4. Hey I'm looking for some advice from excalibur owners on how to proceed here.

I picked this up for $150, the knobs and lower shaft were broken. I ordered and installed anderson knobs which seem like they are going to work great.  The dive shaft is on it right now but I'll get a new shaft here soon.

The most obvious fix I need help with is the wires.

The battery seems to be working fine for now, we will see once I get out on the beach.

All of the connections look in good shape too.

Let me know what yall think I should do to get this puppy back up to par.

    Thanks

I’ve taken the 15 inch out several times now, but the beaches here have been WELL picked over.... been to several parks with it, but haven’t made up my mind about it.... will try it again later in the year when more ppl start going to the beaches.....

Try recovery speed down to 3 (on the 800) it unlocks a whole new layer of targets under the ground.

  6. The jack started corroding. It is chrome plated not gold plated.

The audio started switching between the speaker and the headphones and eventually ended up not having any volume at all when I plugged them in.

You'll love the volume on them.

I'd replace the pads that go around your ear with some gel ones as they are made of foam which holds water.  They just stick on and can be pulled off.

Check my post history and there is a pic of what happened to the plug.

    Best of luck

Traditionally with stereo headphone connections, the Red wire is Right Positive (+), White wire is Left Positive (+), and any other color or bare wire is (-) ground. Of course some manufacturers ignore that.

Thanks.  I played with the wires and the only way to get sound to the headphones is red to red, white to white and yellow to red.  However the sound is so faint I can barely hear it...

It's starting to look like I've bitten off more than I can chew 🤭

Also one more thing I forgot. Once you have all the wires bare, hit them quickly with an open flame to make sure they do not have a coating on the little wire strands. There are examples on Youtube.  I just spliced my cable two days ago and I was Red/Red White/White and Black to Bare.

I think I saw that video too I'll make sure to do that

By bare you mean the exposed copper wire right?

Last night I connected red/red/yellow and white/white.  It gave me sound but it was very faint....I'll take a crack at it again tonight.

Also I'll look into grabbing a new connector as well.

Once I get the connections good I am transplanting everything into the 3m peltors like joe beechnut did to his excal headphones.  The LS pelsos are quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours hunting.

    Thanks!

  10. I am trying to put a new connection onto my ls pelso headphones, the original connector was only chrome plated, it rusted and somehow got bent.  The connector I want to use is a 90deg gold plated one that I have from another crappy pair of earbuds I got on ebay.

I thought they'd have the same wires but after cutting them open they are different.

The Lspelsos have a red wire and a white wire.  Thr Earbud connector has a red white and yellow wire.

After connecting the reds to the whites and plugging it in to the equinox there was no sound

    Can anyone offer any advice?

    Much appreciated and hh

Does anyone know what the difference is between park one and field one as far as algorithms?  If all the settings such as recovery, iron bias, etc. are set the same  what would be the difference?

    This might answer your question...

I think Tone breaks and tone pitches are also different between different modes.

Steve also gives a great explanation here:

I haven't been down south or on the west coast of FL recently, but if your interested in detecting from Jacksonville to the Treasure Coast, I can tell you my experience has been one of a lot more exercise than any significant detecting.

Swfl has been good to me. Over $3000 in jewelry since September (started detecting in June with the simplex and August with the equinox).

    Weekend Warrior.

Location, location, location. I find that rich people aren't so stupid with their jewelry as I thought.  So I started looking for public accesses close to the top hotels. These depositors want to wear their jewelry to show off in the rich areas. They seem to be more careless.

I hunt 2-3 hours before low tide, follow it down and then stay out as far as I can for as long as I can.  Start with big up and downs, tightening them as you define the deposit areas.  Sometimes it takes me 2 days to find a patch, sometimes I hit a ring first target.

Do your research. Drive up and down the beach.  Webcams and tide charts open at the same time. Just some things I do. GLHH
