  1. I don't hunt in the water and mainly hunt for coins etc on land and on the odd beach. For those of you who have bought/used the 15" coil, is it worth the price/upgrade over the stock 11" coil? Around here it's something like $450.00, which is a few bucks.

Nothing I have found works better than my MI-4. I have previously owned the Garrett carrot, the pulse dive and recently got the legend pro package with the Accupoint, and although the Accupoint works better than the carrot and the pulse dive, I prefer the ergonomics and button placement of the MI-4. it just feels so good in my hand and my thumb naturally rests right where the button is. Plus, the pitch sound works better than anything I've ever used to quickly locate a target. My only complaint is it's a little too quiet for my old fart ears, but aside from that, I absolutely love it and at some point here, I plan on selling my Accupoint to get another MI-4 so that my best friend who is just starting out learning to detect has a solid, reliable pinpointer.

From the videos I've watched, the MI-4 does have a good sound to it. I really dislike the sound from my Pro Find 35.

  3. I went out in the back yard, set the ground balance at 0 and the sensitivity at 18 which is when the chatter went away (ATG). I have these coins buried 3 feet away from a 4' tall chain link fence. There is an underground service to my house buried about 10' past the fence. The clad nickle changes depth also with the lowering of the recovery speed. The ID numbers tend to bounce around a fair bit.

    Recovery 5 and Recovery 3

  4. It warmed up a little bit so I went out to the test garden and tried changing the recovery speed in ATG to see if there was a difference with buried clad. With the coins buried down about 6 inches, on recovery 3, it was terrible trying to get an idea if there was something under the coil with a few of the coins. With the recovery set at 6, I could get recognizable repeatable signals, even though they weren't on the target line. More testing will be needed, but I definitely won't be running the recovery at lower numbers when I do get out again.

yes, you're correct, I am achieving great depth in low sensitivity levels with greater ID accuracy with the lower sensitivity.

15 to 19 seems to be my sweet spot for sensitivity.   All I get when I increase sensitivity is more instability, worse target ID's and no perceivable depth increase on coin size targets when I crank up the sensitivity.  I know there will be an increase in depth at higher sensitivity levels, but how much of that is negated by increased EMI and other factors must play a part.   I generally find my good coins at least the depth of my Carrot and in 15 to 19 in sensitivity I'm having no troubles finding them with good clear responses.

I'll have to try lowering the sensitivity on mine when I get back out in the spring and see how it works in my little test garden. I have been turning the sensitivity up until it gets chatty, and then backing it off until it's quiet. Usually 21-23 where I've hunted. I've always been the "more is better" kind of guy, so I never thought of backing it off a bit.

  6. I watched some videos from different channels and did some air tests with my Manticore. Buried some coins in the back yard and found out Canadian $1 & $2 coins (as well as quarters) behave differently in the dirt. With my limited practical experience with this machine I can predict it's junk that I'm going to dig fairly accurately, but I have to dig it to make sure. I had watched some of TNSS videos because he had been recommended by some other You-tubers. I wouldn't waste my time with that one again.
