you have to wind the windows down by hand
Your prospecting rig has windows?! Gee wiz. some people have all the newest equipment.

I would buy a great big goofy Labrador Retriever that has been trained to sniff out humongous gold nuggets.

Off topic but normmcq also worked on that dredge operation.

In the 1970s my father restored and operated a dragline dredge for a mining outfit. They used Hg in their recovery. They were working an old mining area with mostly tailings. There was a significant net gain of Hg.
While dredging with my father in the '80s we recovered over 10 pounds.

I have an old saying.
"All that glitters isn't pyrite"

Mr Herschbach. Sir;
If you fail to post frequent reports with photos, I will make middle of the night posts with political commentary, religious rants, dirty words and disparaging remarks about Australians.
Other than that don't worry about a thing and have a fantastic adventure.

Going off by myself with noise cancelling headphones on, usually unarmed, in bear, mountain lion and wolf territory.
Sometimes I forget to let one of my kids know where I am going too.
Mr. McClendon, Sir;
You are being foolish and demonstrate a total lack of common sense. It comforts me to know I have like minded prospectors on this forum.

What pick KL?
Ha! I will post photographic proof of my ownership of a prospecting pick when I go back and get it from where I forgot it at my claim.
-
EEGADS! I've been forgetting my pick for 10 years already.

Nope. Still have my 5000 and my 7000. If I average the two I have a 6000.

Heavens to Mergatroyd! What's all this "big gold VS small gold discussion?
the big gold pays the bills, the small gold buys the beer. Both equally important.

So, Klunker, were you a saloon keeper during the California Gold Rush?
Yes. In a past life. I was such a bad person that I have been reincarnated among the lowest of the low. - A prospector.

I would think that other factors besides the size of the thumb and forefinger come into play
I used to keep a 30 caliber pistol ball hidden beneath the counter. I would squeeze it real hard between my thumb and finger while I negotiated the number of pinches. due to inflation I have gone to a 50 caliber musket ball.

Aint technology grand! I used a 95 cent whisk broom the last time I cleaned my Jeep - but that was before they invented rechargeable batteries .

Thanks Norvic. I am now 17.2% more likely to consider a 6000.

Mr. 1515
Don't blame me - your the one who brought up the subject of detecting hats and now I get to go off on one of my favorite rants
why in the #&&(( can't some detector manufacturing company provide us with a #%$^ hat that doesn't have a &%$%@ rivet right where the headphone cross piece sits.
Thank you 1515. I feel much better now.

I will try to remain calm. I might even drink a few shots of volatile / flammable liquid before I complete this post.
Any detector will perform beyond it's normal use over a known, planted target. If any detector manufacturer wants to send me 3 detectors and a fancy banner for the background I will give them what ever results they want. I want to see how these three detectors compared searching for a natural in place nugget. Each of these detectors will be shown to have its' own place in the real world.

I would try a Minelab 15" DD Commander coil. Please keep us up to date on your efforts.
Best of luck to you.

this dumb Alaskans perspective,
Dumb Alaskan!? When I learn so much from a "dumb Alaskan" it must put me in the "idiot and dumb Californian" class.
I couldn't agree more with your post.
-
I rate a detector test over a known target about the same as Mr. H. rates an air test. I rate them even lower when there are Minlab banners in the background.

My father introduced me to prospecting at a very young age. I can tell you from experience that this young man is doomed for a very rough life. I hope he enjoys his doom as much as I have.
