I can't wait for this coil. I loved the 17 incher I had for the CTX. It was great for fields and woods. It felt strange going back to the stock coil size of the Equinox. Fingers crossed this will be out before, dare I say it, the ground freezes for months..

No, New York... But, you may find this interesting..... yes, my host is very kind to share his sites with me.
A while back near where I live I found a 3500 to 6000 year old copper adze that my state archaeologists believed may have originated in the Great Lakes Region since there are natural copper deposits in that area... Truly one of my best finds ever.. They are tough to discover here in New York...

I will include the email he sent me back. He is the Curator of Archaeology at our state museum..

"Thanks for your email. Judging from your photographs, yes, this does
appear to be a copper adz (and a very handsome one at that) – this is
suggested by the expanding shape in plan view, the asymmetric side view
profile, and the concave surface on one face.

Such copper adzes and gouges are relatively common in much of the Great
Lakes, especially Wisconsin, where they date roughly to between 4000 and
1500 BC (6000 and 3500 years ago). There, they are viewed as one
diagnostic of the so-called "Old Copper Culture," a Native American
lifeway that included the mining of copper that occurs naturally in
parts of the Great Lakes, in the manufacture of these tools.

In the New York region, these copper artifacts are less common but are
discovered occasionally. Parallel-sided gouges have been found in
association with Brewerton notched points, dating to circa 3000-1500 BC.
 Copper adzes similar in form to yours have been found in the Champlain
basin – their age is uncertain but may be from roughly the same
timeframe. Because there are natural sources of copper in parts of the
Great Lakes, but not New York, archaeologists believe these artifacts
probably came into the region by some form of trade or exchange from
other Great Lakes groups. This interpretation is generally supported by
chemical sourcing methods that compare geologic sources of this material
with artifacts made of copper."
 

I am honestly not the expert on the site since I was invited to detect there and it is about 2 1/2 hours from my location. There was British activity throughout that area later on during the Revolution. Not sure about the 1600's though.

I had a great hunt at the beginning of September with the Equinox. At this site I discovered a nice handful of Native American Kettle Points, Jesuit missionary rings and a tinkler cone or two along with some later 1700's artifacts. One of the rings was an L Heart ring which was worn by the missionary, while the other ring was one that they gave to the Native Americans. Overall a great hunt that will be hard for me to top. I can't wait to get back and try for more.

We find kettle points closer to where I am. They date from the 1650's or so. The Mohawk made the points from metal they traded with missionaries. 

That is pretty cool.. I have the QC 35s but didn't bother using them because of the lag.. Maybe one of these is in the future..

That's what I was expecting too! I wasn't going to go for the 6-inch coil and just wait for the 15 inch. But at that price...

Yeah, I have had the CTX since it first came out and loved it. I got an offer I couldn't refuse though, so I sold it. My thoughts at that time were to try the Equinox, if I like it, keep it, if not sell it and get a new CTX that has a warranty. So far no regrets...

I will go back to that site and try it with Field 2.  It sounds like those Field 2 Park 2's are for the most part the way to go. I like to learn on my own by experimenting, but it would be foolish not to watch/read and learn from someone that has already worked hard to understand the Equinox and share their findings.

Yes lots of variables. Definitely an eye-opener. Unfortunately don't have my CTX now to compare the signals. In that adjacent field that I mentioned I have been over that many many times with the CTX. I don't think I posted over here that with the Equinox I did dig another button, a cufflink, and actually that part of a buckle that is in the image attached to this post. Other than that everything I've been trying to get out of that field with the Equinox has been iron trash. I have walked away with an empty pouch many of times with the CTX. So far the equinox is earning its keep.

I went back to a little area that's probably about 60 by 60 feet in a woods setting. This area has produced many flat buttons over the years. Although a nice historical find they are pretty generic looking. Some have backmarks but for the most part they are blank. I have detected the area with the CTX and earlier before that the E-Trac. When I first discovered this site I was pulling out button after button. Not exactly sure why there's so many in this area and no coins, but nonetheless it was nice to hide from the Sun in the adjacent field and detect in the shade for a while now and then. As time went on finds dwindled and now every so often I would go back just to see what I could find there. Usually I could pop a button or two if I tried hard enough. I had hit it multiple times with the CTX and the 17 inch coil and figured it had finally given up the ghost.

You probably know where this is going by now...

This morning I decided to revisit this site with the Equinox 800. I was using pretty much stock settings of Field 1 but I bumped the recovery speed up to 7.  Lo and behold I started hearing smooth repeatable signals. Nine buttons later I was left scratching my head wondering how I could have missed these. All of these! There were a couple iffy signals I dug that ended up being buttons,  but for the most part they sounded good. They ranged from 7 to 18 on the Equinox. I haven't dug that many buttons from this site in years. The larger button (maybe a small dandy) and the musketball were at the fringe of the site, but I am still surprised they were missed all these years. The site does have some square nails and iron trash mixed in. Not what I would call loaded with iron but it is there..

My credentials are that I have been detecting for years, been using Minelab since the 90s, read books and wrote articles about detecting, so I guess I consider myself a pretty good detectorists.  Now along comes the Equinox and it made me feel bad in a way today. By that I mean how could my good old CTX have missed these. .

I have! I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Equinox did not suffer from the terrible interference that my CTX experienced after the farmer had an electric fence put in for his cows.

With the CTX no matter anything I did it would make so much noise. I found with the Equinox after a noise cancel it was nice and quiet. It was amazing how far the interference from the fence would go across the fields making it a real pain to detect large parts of the farm. I actually have a video of the sound that I would hear on the CTX attached in the link below. I actually am going back to this site this morning and if I find any different results I will update my response.

I can't wait for the 15 incher. I used the 17 on the CTX for years with great results. I already have been missing the lack of coverage with the stock Equinox coil. Hopefully within a couple months the 15 will be out.

Hope everyone is well out there. I was using the Equinox the other day at lunch time and working my way through a mess of bottle caps. This is one of those places that has been detected over and over again for years (local hotspot for detectorists). In fact as I was detecting a guy stopped his car and said to me "Don't waste your time, we have been over this field a thousand times" ( or something like that, I was taking my headphones off when he first started talking). If he hadn't of said that I probably wouldn't have shown him what I found. But, it was too tempting. Ha, maybe that was his logic all along. His eyes bugged out when I showed him the coins. Anyway we had a good talk, and know mutual other Detectorists. Nice guy.

The coins rang in real nice around 27 and were about eight inches deep. I was running park 2 with high sensitivity. Recovery speed was at 6 and Iron Bias at 2. I am seeing screw caps coming in as high as 24 even a couple iffy 25s. The coins I have been digging have been above that so far (besides a buffalo nickel at another older less trashy site).

Update

I found a Barber dime at that park yesterday which rang up 25. That is the same ID as some of those bottle caps. So I will be digging those deeper 25s for sure..

Rachel at Cabela's dropship told me they had received over a hundred orders on the 20th. Sounds like they didn't expect such a response for the item...

If you create a UPS account you should be able to check for any inbound packages to your address. That is how I knew it was on it's way...

Anyone out there that may still  be waiting for their Cabela's orders... I found out on Thursday night from Rachel that Minelab did unexpectedly get a small order in and my order (which was submitted very early on 2/20) was shipping in the next one or two business days. I checked my UPS account and found that I have an inbound package from Minelab scheduled for delivery next week. The thing is unless you check your incoming UPS deliveries you wouldn't realize it was on the way... 

I can't wait to join in the fun using the Equinox..

Unfortunately I didn't use free shipping... Didn't realize that was an option until later...

Whoops realized I misstated something in my earlier post I should have said it was my first order from Cabela's

I received an email yesterday afternoon from Cabela's. Rachel in the Dropship department told me she couldn't tell me exactly why mine hadn't shipped since they are supposed to go out in the order they were received.  (mine was ordered at 5:20 AM EST on 2/20). The best guess that Rachel had was that since this was my first order with Minelab the order was checked for fraud before being sent to Minelab. She said without any other order numbers I could provide her from ones that shipped out after mine she couldn't be sure. But that I will probably get mine by 3/30.. Happy Happy Joy...

I am still dealing with Cabela's. They did email me back this morning saying orders are filled as they come in. But, obviously that isn't the case... Here is Rachel at Cabela's Dropship email.
