And thanks for reading & commenting. Remember, the plan is only as smart as the writer. Or perhaps I am sandbagging. Or perhaps you may be surprised. The soap opera continues.

Yes I think gold and silver are going to spike like you said.

The reason I think a trip to Mexico is a bad plan is this. They are a very tight crew of 5 men. If three head for Mexico they are no longer 5 men and will be very vulnerable to all sorts of danger. They won't be tight and they won't be strong splitting up like that. Especially the two guarding the camp, claim and treasure. Even with the deputies help they are goners. Would be easy to ambush them. The three going south are traveling hundreds of miles to a foreign country with foreign laws to confront men they have never met in a place that they know nothing about. Gosh what could go wrong there? I know these 3 are tough but they aren't bullet proof and probably don't even speak spanish.

I realize it is fiction and I don't mean to criticize YOU and your efforts because you are writing every day and I don't mean to hinder that. Sorry for the lengthy comment Ghostminer and from now on I will just enjoy the ride and not comment much. Thank you!

Hey Bedrocker - don't insult the crew LOL.

I like the crew. I just don't want them to die without getting all of that treasure and gold out of the ground first.                 And where are all of the women? They go into town to 'unwind'? And end up in the bar drinking more booze?                  Not my idea of how to unwind. In a hotel room with a fairly attractive woman would be more like it.                          Seems like these guys would have gotten tired by now of dating mano-uella. What do you think?

       June 7   1937     Part One

This morning was a great weigh with three ounces to put in the jar. The gold along the base of the mountain near country rock is producing a constant supply of gold. This is what we all want to see. There is nothing like gold. Since the crew has worked so hard and we are all rolling in money from our treasure find I called a quick meeting this morning before work started. I asked the crew if they thought we should hire more people to work as security and also some to work as miners. No one seemed to want to bring in any new people. I reminded them that we are very low on security and at risk out here. John said it might be good to hire a big security crew but wasn’t sure how we would find trustworthy people. We had been able to count on Sarge and Ben. I told the crew I was going into town this afternoon to see if I could find some people to interview for security guards.

Will and I went up to the hill and dug until about 2:00 in the afternoon. We got 70 buckets down to the tom. Then John and I took the truck into town leaving the rest of the crew at camp. We were on a lonely section of the road when I noticed a big car coming up at a fast clip from behind. I slowed the truck and pulled off towards the shoulder and waved him past as he seemed to be in a hurry but the car slowed down and wouldn’t pass. I asked John what all this was about. He had the BAR with him and I had one of the Thompsons. We also were wearing our 45’s.

As I continued to slow the truck down the car came along side of us. It was a black Cadillac sedan with four men inside. I got a look at the driver but didn’t recognize him. They were staring right at us. I continued to slow down and wave them past but they just slowed down with me.

       TO BE CONTINUED ...............

So I leaned back in my seat as John rested the barrel of his BAR on my window sill and proceeded to remodel the top of that Cadillac. Right?

  4. Doesn't Sarge or John own a farm? I don't understand why they haven't used that farm for a place to bury some of that loot.

Of course you would want to make sure that no one follows you lol. Seems like no matter what precautions you take in this story somebody is watching you.

How in the heck Jed let someone sneak up on him and shoot him in the back of the head while he was burying his gold is almost unbelieveable.

Good story though man! Keep up the good work and thank you!

The 4th summer beach hunt is again at that same small beach. Sun was full bore but had some clouds roll in from time to time. I figured I’d spend a good chunk of the day getting to re-learn the CTX. I forgot most of the tricks for depth on a beach and finally remembered how the menu and buttons work. 🙄 No silver or gold goodies today but did manage one decent target – a 1926 (or 5) Buffalo Nickel. I used the CTX for about 5 hours just to try and get silver, but the clad layer was dominating. The GPX was used in the wet sand for about 3 hours and scored the deep Buffalo nickel. Lot of digging, a lot of coins but no shiny today. If I get out, Maybe taking the EQ in the water and fight them waves a bit. 🏊‍♂️

     April 16   1937

I was up early this morning. It was way before the first of the crew got up and it gave me a chance to do some thinking. It seems we are getting off to a slow start. It is very early in the season so I am not too worried but the crew doesn’t seem focused on mining like we were last year. Also, we have a new crew member in Hudson. I am feeling a bit of doubt on my leadership skills. I try to think of Jed and what he would do and say. We all need to start concentrating on our jobs at hand and not so much as being mining legends and ruff characters to the town folk. I think John enjoys the fame but I could do without it.

When breakfast was finished I called a quick meeting before we headed up the mountain. I laid it all out there on the line and asked them if they were ok with me leading the crew and wanted to know if I had their confidence. They all to the man assured me that they were 100 percent behind me. Even Sarge and Ben expressed much confidence in me. I was relieved to say the least. I have big shoes to fill here and I can never be Jed. He was one of a kind and I miss him  every day. I keep expecting to see him coming down the mountain and into camp and uncorking a bottle of whiskey. It has been hard for me and it’s not getting any easier.

We all worked our jobs today without drama and collected one more ounce of gold. The southern kettle was not paying well.

       TO BE CONTINUED ....................

I miss Jed as well. Wish we had a photo of him.

$10 - $15 K per drill hole because of depth and difficulty but there still are no takers for a few holes. I know the gold is there. When the small area of bedrock raised during upheaval the sides that stayed low had to have nearly as much gold as well, maybe more. This is according to professionals who have visted the site.

I admit that I don't know much about core drilling. But isn't the drilling through gravel and not solid rock? And you are talking about drilling down 20' to possibly 50' or so? I guess it takes a big enough truck that can climb those hills and set up a tower with the drilling rig on it. Sounds like an expensive truck but the drilling part of it would be kinda easy compared to solid rock?

  8. 2 hours ago, GhostMiner said:

The gold strike was real and done by hand a small crew in 1936. The area of raised bedrock was 20 ft by 30 ft where over 1000 ounces of gold was removed. Completely true. I believe this was only a small amount of the gold in that deposit. That area was long forgotten until I re-discovered the strike in the government report of 1965. The main deposit is probably 20 ft deeper as true bedrock was never approached by the crew. My best guess is that there is still several million dollars in gold about 70 to 80 ft below the surface.

Yikes! Can you do core drilling to determine if your best guess is a reality?

       April 11   1937   Part Six

When we got to the cabin we took out a flashlight and helped Slugger walk us to the place where he said the gold was buried. It was there. I asked him how much of it was left. He told me nearly all of it. He had only spent maybe ten percent or so. It was in a steel container and we took it back to the truck. We put Slugger in the cab between us and I drove. On the way back to camp John worked him over some more. He was nearly unconscious when we drove into camp. I told the crew we had recovered most of the gold. We tied up the two goons and threw them in the back of the truck. I told everyone to watch the informant and make sure he didn’t leave and be on high alert. I said that John and I had some business to attend to. I drove and John stayed in the back of the truck with the two tied up goons. We were taking them to the place where they had committed the murder of my brother. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. That’s what it says.

When we got to the place Jed was robbed and killed I pulled the truck over and we  dragged the two thieves to the scene of the crime. It was still dark so I shined a flashlight where they had found Jed. I told them to take a good look at the place they murdered my brother. They were begging us to turn them over to the law. I told them that was too good for them. They were both crying for mercy. We stood them up against a big rock and pulled our pistols. I asked them which one wanted it first. There was no answer.

       TO BE CONTINUED ......................

I was hoping they would find out how they snuck up on Jed at his gold hiding spot. Please ask before you blow their heads off.

       April 11   Part Three

We walked up behind them and they were drunk and didn’t even notice us. John carried a weighted billy club and pulled it out and I had brass knuckles on. We also had sidearms. John eased up behind the one they called Slugger and pretended to know him. He said he had a bottle of good whiskey over at the truck and pointed over there. Slugger acted like he recognized him or knew him and said let’s go drink it. His buddy Jim went along easy until we got near the truck and spotted me wearing brass knuckles. Before he could say anything I let him have a right hand square in the face and took out his front teeth. John clocked Slugger in the knee with the billy and he went down and started hollering and cursing. John cracked him across the face with his fist twice and we threw them in the back of the truck and jumped back there with them. I told Sarge to get the hell out of here before someone sees us and he drove back toward the mine. The two thugs were moaning and cursing and we let them have more of the same and told them to shut their mouths if they wanted to live. We pulled off the main road and drove up to our camp. Ben,Will, and Hudson were waiting for us. We threw the two goons off the truck and onto the ground and the entire crew and security team was staring down at them.

Well the season is off to a good start isn't it?

LOST GOLD AT THE DEAD MAN’S MINE

                                                   SEASON TWO

       April 6   1937

My name is Jacob Stevens. My older brother Jed started our mining project and was murdered last year. His gold that he worked so hard for is gone. I have had no luck in finding the filthy scum who killed him. If I ever do, they will pay dearly. My brother was a hero to me and was responsible for our gold mining success. We were able to find the journal he kept and it is in my possession now. I have what possessions he left behind. His truck, camping gear, all of the mining equipment, and some odds and ends. Seeing as he kept a journal of the activities here I feel it is now my duty to continue the journal so everything that happens here is documented.

Jed and Whisky Jack believed there is still a great deal of gold remaining to be mined on the claims. I am taking on all mining responsibilities for this season and I have a good crew ready. They are hard workers and battle tested. I am not expecting an easy time of it as we have made enemies. However, I will not let that stop us from achieving our dreams of gold and riches. The mining crew will be made up of Will, John, Hudson, and me. Sarge and Ben have committed to working security for the entire season. I have arrived at the claims ahead of the crew and the rest of them will be here tomorrow. I will be staying in town tonight and when the crew arrives we will set up our camp and mining equipment. I want to make my brother proud. It is going to be very hard to get used to working without him here. It will be hard for all of us. May God be with us.

Yee Haw! Thank you Ghost Miner!

Thank you. What I had when I started this was the government report where several pages were devoted to the miner and his gold strike. I had no idea where I would take it and there was no outline. I put myself in the place of the miner and how things might have happened. I would just wait for the next journal entry idea to pop into my head. It was a day to day thing. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I left a lot of room for speculation about who killed Jed and what season two will be like.

You did a great job Ghost Miner 👍.

It is also interesting that this happened as soon as the crew left. Perhaps they were watching & waiting?

Are you referring to someone in the crew or a hooligan?

I doubt that every bit of conversation about gold was recorded in the journal. We can safely assume that.

We know the crew was concerned for Jed's safety. At the very end Jed may have told them not to worry about him and that he had his gold stashed miles away. He may even have said that the very next day after everyone leaves he is going to drive up and check on his gold. If he had a back stabbing crew member that was intent on robbing him then Jed may have let on too much about going to check on the gold. Then figure that Hudson and the other guy's eyes about pop out of their head when they are told how much gold the crew had total. For sure a few hundred ounces was Jed's. It may have been more than a honest crew member could handle.

It seems odd how fast the robber moved in. Word must have traveled very fast after the crew left, if it was one of the hooligans. For sure Jed had made lots of enemies up there!

But I can't understand Jed's thinking that he could make it alone all winter. Not even a good dog to bark and warn him about someone sneaking around. If Jed was woken up in his tent with a rifle stuck in his face then a dog would very likely have prevented that.

But the loneliness and the snow and the hooligans how in the world did he think he could handle that in a camp tent? Kinda crazy IMO.

Should have taken that gold and wintered out in the company of a good woman and stay away from the whiskey for awhile lol. Play it smarter.

Of course I'm one to talk lol...

    Wow wonder how that happened?

Seems like it would have been very difficult for someone to tail him for 20 miles to where the gold was hidden.

Amazing that the killer never bragged about it and was found out.

UNLESS Jed was double crossed by someone in the crew!

Thank you very much Ghost Miner for telling this tale and are the same guys coming back next season to mine? Guys from the same crew?

OR perhaps Jed was jumped by someone while he was alone at the camp and then was forced at gun point to drive to the gold.

On the promise they wouldn't kill him, but they did anyway.

Would Jed do that or would he rather die first and keep his gold a secret?

    Wish we could ask him!

                                     EPILOGUE

At this point there were no further writings in the journal. Several days after the last entry Jed Stevens was found dead. His body had been discovered by some hunters about twenty miles from his claims. He had been shot through the back of the head and was lying on the ground near a large boulder. There was a small hole that had been dug out underneath it but when the hunters searched there was nothing there. He was identified and law enforcement notified his brother of his tragic death. Evidently he had been murdered for his gold. The perpetrators were never found. It is said that his ghost haunts the mine to this day.

A NOTE TO READERS :    Be sure to watch for the next edition of this series as the

miners return to the claims and resume their adventures in

See you up in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
