Been to the gulf a couple times on vacation before I was into the hobby and we used to load up on those fossilized sharks teeth!

It's always fun to find them. Here's one I found with a metal detector a couple years ago. I had to really laugh when I saw that in the scoop! Couldn't believe it!

Can't see the pictures but I'm sure that you dug up quite a bit of trash for that gold. I was doing some bench testing the other day and one of the nicest rings in my collection rings up as a "14" on my 800. However, it was found on the beach with one of my pulse detectors.

Here is the 14-k ring that IDs as a "14" on the Nox 800.

  3. I'm still hunting the eroded areas from our last hurricane Idalia but the sand is filling things in.

Found this little medal weighing 1.2 grams about 8 inches deep. It depicts the Gemini Twins and is marked on the upper backside tab 333 FB. After doing some research, I read it is 8 karat gold that is used primarily / solely in Germany. I guess the US and other countries do not use such a low karat gold in jewelry making.

I have never found 8k before and was wondering if anyone else has ever found such a low gold content item? Almost all the coins I found were greenies so I'm not surprised the medal is tarnished and pitted with green as well. Such a great hobby, this treasure hunting. Ya never know what's out there!

what a about necklaces/chain do you feel its worth to learn prospecting audio? I tried prospecting audio few times too but my brain cant make sense of the audio feedback.. I'm more on all region enhanced audio.. I'm trying to figure out the best combinations to maximize the potential of finding necklace/chain .. lol. Sorry to hijack thread..

I run the same settings as TampaBayBrad and have found the prospecting audio to be the best for my ears. It is a sharp sound whenever it hits on non-ferrous metal and being in the soft Florida sand makes recovery easy to do and I don't have to give too much thought / decision to dig a target.

This stainless-steel chain with a sterling medal gave a mixed sort of sounds and came out about 8 inches deep in the wet salt sand. The earring is 925 and the ring copper.

I have found around 5 gold chains, nothing big, using these settings and lots of steel chains. Will post some pics when I get them together. If anything sounds close to being good and occasionally the iron grunts...I dig it

Great hunt. Looks like my hunts with the greenies and trash. Bottom ring is Christian Dior. Most are plated , some are solid. Still worth a few $$. I have found several over the years.

Thanks for figuring out the CD ring. I've got a feeling it's plated, just doesn't have the look of solid gold.

    On to the next!

  6. Here are 2 more pieces of gold that hurricane Idalia uncovered for my searches. Still nothing heavy to be found in the water and searching out there has been fruitless. These were found 2 weeks ago where the sand was stripped from the upper beach. The ring is marked .585 and sadly...the stone is not a diamond according to my tester. Someone said it might be a white sapphire, so it needs to be properly tested. My walks are getting longer as I continue to look for severely eroded areas along the coastline and hopefully more gold.

The other initial ring is etched k18, but I'm a little suspicious as the metal is rather shiny but did dissolve with a 22k acid test. Thanks for looking.

  7. Here is a 14K gold that rings up a solid 14 on the Equinox 800. I was staying ahead of a fleet of bulldozers that were doing a beach renourishment about 5 years ago and was hunting a small strip of dry / wet sand that was soon to be covered with 5 feet of sand. The pile of junk gives you an idea of the trash to gold ring ratio. These are zip files so don't know if they will open.

Great hunts, OG, well done and congrats on the silver and gold and also for finding both halves of the broken gold ring! There's an interesting donut looking sinker next to a tenet peg in one of your photos that looks like it has some age to it.

I may have broken the ring when digging it. It was two scoops down in a rather hard packed layer and when I dumped the second scoop of sand and gave it a light kick, I and saw a glimpse of the gold ring. I picked it up and checked the pile again hoping the other half was there and sure enough, a nice sounding target. Two halves made the whole! 😊

Congrats on a very nice hunt. At least your hurricane hunt got silver & gold ! (unlike mine 😭). So when the ocean starts pushing back some of that sand back onto the beach from the swim area, is that the time to hit the swim area again. Maybe it deposited all the gold there when it ripped the upper beach clean. Only the heaviest targets remained up top (lead). I'd keep an eye on that swim area and as soon as targets start to show up again, maybe a chance for some gold. Or am I way off? 😅

I think you're right about the movement of sand back onto the beach. The lighter sand gets pushed up leaving the heavies behind. I know that a strong current that runs parallel to the beach can move lots of sand to another part of the beach yet leaving it still in the water and create a deep trough that has lots of goodies. Some of the beaches I hunt are constantly changing. I would love to have that GPX 5000 right about now. 😁

It was still a good hunt. But I can tell by your wording that this was a storm that you look forward to and were expecting more gold. That is alot of sand movement. There must be more there but probably covered up until the next. GL....

I was definitely expecting gold when I came upon a large flat section that had sinkers about every other target, I dug about 30 the first time I hunted it. Went back the next day and must have dug another 20 or so, but no gold.  Good thing I didn't bet my paycheck that I'd find gold. lol

  11. Hurricane Idalia went up through the Gulf of Mexico a little over 2 weeks ago. It caused significant erosion along some portions of the west coast of Florida. I've been hunting mainly where the erosion has stripped large sections of sand up to the dunes or seawalls. Most of these finds were in the eroded areas including the two 14k and the broken 10k ring. The storm pulled a lot of sand off the beach and into the water. Not many finds in the water, probably because everything out there is covered up. One of the rings pictured is silver with a small 18K circle of gold on its side with the manufacturers name on it. Another picture shows where a walkway went down to the water. Nothing left but the last support that held it up. There was at least 100 feet of sandy beach at that spot before the storm. Now the water is right up to the seawall with boulders shown. I was amazed that in one long stretch of beach loads of sinkers were found but no gold was found in that area. I've been back several times now where all the sinkers were found but still can't pull out any gold...yet. Unfortunately, the sea turtle nests were wiped out for miles. Nothing left but some yellow painted sticks that marked where they once were.    Bob

Tom D. commented on his forum, its a 9 inch prototype and wasn't supposed to be on your list.

"Hmmmmmmmmmmm. That info was NOT supposed to leak out.
Yes. There are a few proto's floating around. Here's one tidbit I'm willing to share: --- As to be expected; the 9" coil is not as deep as the standard 11" coil......with identical settings. BUT.......(for instance)........ in a wet-salt environment.........the performance is less than the 11" coil with same settings; YET, the smaller coil allows for additional Sens increase.......due to the smaller coil seeing less wet-salt feedback/hinderance. With the authorized extra Sensitivity increase......... nearly all of the depth is regained.....and nearly to the same performance levels of the 11" coil.
The 9" coil is formidably lighter.
We are still debating the "need" for this coil. We are still debating the "marketing" of this coil........and the associated projected sales numbers. Not sure we'll even produce it."

I'm in the saltwater 90% of the time and am always trying to squeeze as much sensitivity as possible for the elusive gold chain and added depth. A smaller coil would suit me just fine for the sole purpose of cranking up sensitivity, mitigating the effects of salt to a certain beneficial degree and hopefully being able to pick up the small responses' chains give off. If I could get the depth of the stock coil or something close to it, with the smaller coil then sign me up.
